Kosho is currently offering a limited-time discount of $25 off the Introductory Course fee (normally $75) for new students of all ages. The Introductory Course is a series of three one-on-one classes scheduled at your convenience and taught by our Sensei, David Hamann. The classes will give you an excellent overview of the Okinawan Shuri-Ryu style of karate that is taught at Kosho.

Last weekend's USKK Karate Symposium in Cincinnati offered an unparalleled opportunity to learn new things, develop one's karate practice, share ideas and techniques, and meet new people. This is a national event, and USKK dojos from across the country were represented.

Featured presenter was Hanshi Bruce Heilman, a 10th degree black belt and internationally-recognized martial arts instructor and author. There were several other distinguished presenters, as well, including our own Sensei, David Hamann, Kosho instructor Nate England, and one of Kosho's founders, Richard Awad.

On Saturday, everyone enjoyed a special performance by the Okinawan Dance Troupe.

The Symposium is open to all USKK ranks and to kids 12 and up. If you didn't get there this year, we hope to see you next year!

What's it like to begin your karate journey as an adult? Most people assume that karate training is something that only little kids and teens do, but what they don't realize is that karate is meant for people of all ages. No matter what your age is, you can be successful if you're willing to make time for your practice and attend class.

Many of the students in our adult classes began their karate training in their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, and even sixties. They're learning the standards, learning about themselves, achieving belt promotions, and they're on their way to black belt. You can do the same.

If you've ever wondered what it's like inside the Kosho School of Karate, this is your chance to find out! This post is the first in a series of "Get to Know the Dojo", which will focus on the unique aspects of the Kosho School of Karate.

But first...what is a Dojo? Great question! In Japanese, dojo literally means "A Place of the Way", and it's the building where Martial Arts (such as Karate, Kobudo, Iaido, Jo-do & Judo) are practiced. Kosho School of Karate follows the National Dojo Kun (training hall rules) and follows etiquette guidelines to ensure that it is a proper place to study the path of Karate, for yourself, and for others.

The space inside a Dojo is considered different from everyday spaces and is therefore treated with respect. To show this, shoes are taken off at the door, you bow when you enter, and it is everyone's responsibility to keep the dojo clean and orderly. The Dojo has a Kamiza (place of honor), with photos of the previous instructors and various mementos that are important to the school.

The Kosho School of Karate has a wooden deck for working out, a large wooden beam for hanging heavy bags, both modern weights and traditional Karate training equipment, and various weapons for practicing armed martial arts.
