This Thanksgiving, we reflect on the deep gratitude woven into the fabric of traditional Okinawan karate.

In our Matsubayashi-ryu practice, we learn that true strength comes not from what we can take, but from what we can give: our effort, our respect, our commitment to continuous improvement. The Okinawan masters taught us that karate begins and ends with courtesy, and that the greatest victory is over oneself.

Today, we give thanks:

For our senseis, who light the path
For our training partners, who challenge us to grow
For the generations of masters who preserved these teachings
For the discipline that shapes our character
For each day we can train, learn, and serve

A week ago, our dojo had the honor of attending the Okinawa Karate Seminar in Atlanta, part of the Special Overseas Caravan Program for the 3rd Okinawa Karate World Tournament 2026.

We traveled up Sunday, spent Monday training under four extraordinary Senseis directly from Okinawa, and returned home Tuesday with our cups overflowing with new knowledge and inspiration.

๐’๐ก๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐›๐ฎ๐ค๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ ๐™๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ก๐ฎ๐ง ๐’๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž๐ข, ๐Š๐ข๐ก๐š๐ ๐š๐ฐ๐š ๐Œ๐š๐ฌ๐š๐ง๐š๐ซ๐ข ๐’๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž๐ข, ๐”๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ข ๐’๐š๐๐š๐ข๐ฆ๐จ ๐’๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž๐ข, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐†๐ข๐›๐จ ๐“๐š๐ค๐š๐ก๐ข๐ค๐จ ๐’๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž๐ข shared their mastery, precision, and deep understanding of traditional Okinawan karate. Each brought their unique perspective and decades of experience, and we soaked up every moment of those 75-minute training sessions.

The experience reminded us why we train: to connect with the living tradition of karate, to push ourselves beyond what we thought possible, and to be part of a global community dedicated to this beautiful art.
