It is time for our Trainer Tip Tuesday!
The Most Important Thing About Body Composition Scanners
Many people assume that the “best” body composition scanner is the one with the most features, the most frequencies, or the fanciest app.
Not necessarily.
The most important characteristic of any body composition scanner is repeatability.
If you scan today and then scan again a few minutes later under the same conditions, the results should be very similar, if not identical. If they aren’t, how do you know whether your body changed or the scanner changed?
Over the years, I’ve performed thousands of InBody scans and completed InBody certification training. One thing I’ve consistently observed is that professional-grade scanners tend to provide much more repeatable results than consumer-grade devices.
I’ve personally own and have used a InBody Dial H30 home scanner. On paper, it looks impressive and even uses more frequencies than the professional-grade InBody 270 we use at Gymies. However, I found the repeated scans on the InBody Dial H30 varied significantly more than what I routinely see on our InBody 270.
Think about that for a moment.
If an experienced, certified scan operator who understands hydration, posture, timing, and testing procedures struggles to get consistent repeat scans at home, imagine how much variability can occur when the average person performs their own scans under different conditions every day.
This doesn’t mean home scanners are worthless. They can still provide general trends over time.
However, when you’re trying to track small changes in body fat, muscle mass, or progress from a nutrition and exercise program, repeatability becomes extremely important.
That’s one reason we continue using a professional-grade InBody system at Gymies. Consistent measurements help you make better decisions and provide a more reliable way to monitor your progress.
Remember: The goal isn’t just getting a number.
The goal is getting a number you can trust.
