Congratulations to Michele for being "Client of the Week"!!

Michele started working with Coach Derek to help her improve her core strength after having surgery, and to help her get into shape.

She has lost body fat, gained muscle, and her core is so much stronger!!

She is able to do many daily activities with ease that were tough or painful before, and her balance has really improved!

Michele has gotten so much stronger and is a joy for Coach Derek to train.

She makes everyone in the gym smile and spreads positivity to everyone around her!

Many of our clients have the goals of aging more gracefully, feeling better, moving better, getting up and down off the floor to play with their kids and grandkids.

What would life look like for YOU if you stuck with exercise just 2-3 days per week for 30 minute sessions for a year?!

Our secret sauce:
- Accountability
- Guidance
- a knowledgeable trainer who truly cares
- a comfortable, non-intimidating environment

That’s how you stick with it! 💪

Today's recipe was shared by one of our awesome clients in Vestal, Linda Hall!

This homemade bread has 11 grams of protein per slice and all clean ingredients!!

MULTI-GRAIN PROTEIN BREAD

INGREDIENTS:

DOUGH-
3 large egg whites or 2 whole large eggs, plus lukewarm water as needed
1 cup (227g) cottage cheese
2 tablespoons (42g) honey
1 3/4 teaspoons (10g) table salt
3 cups (360g) King Arthur Unbleached Bread Flour
1 1/4 cups (113g) old-fashioned rolled oats or 1 cup (113g) King Arthur Rolled Oats
1/2 cup (74g) King Arthur Harvest Grains Blend*
2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 teaspoons instant yeast
1/4 cup (40g) pumpkin seeds, raw; optional

TOPPING (optional)-
lightly beaten large egg white, for brushing
King Arthur Harvest Grains Blend, for sprinkling

INSTRUCTIONS:

Place the egg whites or eggs in a liquid measuring cup. Add additional lukewarm water to reach 3/4 cup (or 180g total weight of egg and water).

Add all of the ingredients except for the pumpkin seeds to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Mix on low speed until the dough comes together, about 2 minutes, then increase the speed to medium until the dough is pulling away from the sides of the bowl and is slightly sticky, 5 to 7 minutes. Add the pumpkin seeds, if using, and mix until incorporated.

Transfer the dough to a clean work surface. If it’s too sticky to handle, dust it lightly with flour, but resist adding any more than necessary, and use a bench knife or bowl scraper to help release the dough and move it on the surface. Gently stretch the dough to 1"-thick rectangle that's roughly 9" x 7" in size, then roll the dough into a 9" log, pinching the seams together.

Transfer the dough to a greased bowl or container (a 2-quart dough-rising bucket works well), cover, and let rise until doubled in size, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Gently place the shaped loaf in a greased 9" x 5" loaf pan and cover loosely with lightly greased plastic wrap. Allow the bread to proof in a warm spot for 60 to 90 minutes, until it's domed about 1" above the edge of the pan and roughly doubled in size. A finger pressed into the dough should leave a mark that rebounds slowly. Toward the end of the rise, preheat your oven to 375°F with a rack in the center.

If desired, gently brush the surface of the loaf with lightly beaten egg white and sprinkle with a few pinches of Harvest Grains Blend. With a sharp knife or lame, score the loaf: Make a deep slash (about 1/2" deep) down the length of the loaf.

Bake the bread for 35 to 45 minutes, tenting with foil as necessary to prevent overbrowning, until the crust is golden brown and the interior temperature measures at least 190°F at the center of the loaf when measured with a digital thermometer.

Remove the bread from the oven, tip the loaf out of the pan onto a wire rack, and cool completely before slicing.

Storage information: Store the protein bread in a plastic bag at room temperature for up to 4 days; freeze the sliced bread in an airtight bag or container for up to 2 months.

Does Sleep REALLY Impact Weight Loss?

Our next tip with blocking out Food Noise (the post from a few weeks ago) was to get proper SLEEP!

Proper sleep helps in the process of losing weight, keeping it off, and staying healthy overall.

In fact, lack of sleep can increase appetite by changing your hormones, it makes you more likely to eat unhealthy foods, and it influences how body fat is lost when you're being more health-conscious.

You may be thinking "well you don't understand MY life and MY reason for not sleeping".

Well, I may not know your reasons personally, but I do have my own excuses!

I have 4 kids ages 7 and under, and bedtime is rough around here. I'm in the thick of it, my friend!

Regardless of the excuses, the tips I'm going to give you are relevant for ANY stage of life, and they personally help me to not be a literal zombie most days!

Even if there are circumstances out of your control, you DO have the ability to set yourself up for successful sleep!

READ BELOW:

1) AVOID CAFFEINE LATER IN THE DAY

Consuming caffeine later in the day can interfere with deep sleep!

It is suggested to stop consuming caffeine at least 6 hours before sleep in order to set yourself up for successful DEEP sleep.

2) TURN OFF ELECTRONICS AT NIGHT

You may feel the need to mindlessly scroll before bed, but if you can, stay away from electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed.

Here is the reason why it matters:

Artificial light interferes with our brain’s production of melatonin, which regulates your metabolism and can ensure deep sleep!

So, if you can, read a book instead!

3) WATCH YOUR LATE-NIGHT SNACKS!

If you feel the need to snack late at night, it’s probably because you’re not eating enough throughout the day.

Or it could be your body telling you to drink more water!

Digestion takes a lot of energy and it makes it a lot harder to fall asleep or to get good quality sleep.

If you do plan on snacking or eating later at night, avoid foods that contain caffeine, refined sugars (candy/cookies/ice cream), spicy or fried foods, alcohol, or foods high in sodium.

All of these can disrupt your sleep cycle and/or cause heartburn and indigestion!

Instead, according to sleep.com, eating things like seeds & nuts, greek yogurt, whole grain cereal, bananas, or hummus and veggies won't interfere with your sleep patterns.

4) GO TO BED EARLIER!

Sticking to a reasonable bedtime teaches your body to release calming hormones to help you fall asleep.

Routine is key!

Even if you get woken up by little people at night, like I do, you can still make it a point to go to bed at a reasonable time and stay away from your phone right before bed.

If you have a hard time falling back asleep, a natural, non-habit forming supplement like magnesium glycinate is really helpful.

If you work on setting yourself up for successful sleep, your energy levels will be through the roof and it will only make it easier for you to keep the weight off (if that is your goal) and stay healthy!

Congratulations to Joe for being September "Client of the Month"!!

Joe's wife Diane started off as a client here early last year and eventually convinced him to try us out for 1 month.

He liked it so much, he decided to stick around! ☺

Joe has been crushing it since starting here this past Spring.

He has gotten stronger and has noticed how much easier it is to do everyday tasks!

Joe has lost 16 lbs since starting his program!

We asked him some questions about his KW Fitness experience:

1) What was life like before you started coming to KW Fitness? (Why did you seek out personal training?)

"I didn't feel good about my health"

2) What changes have you noticed in yourself as a result of training here at KW Fitness?

"I have more energy and I'm feeling stronger"

3) What is the best thing that has come out of this for you?

"Just overall feeling better"

4) What would you say to someone on the fence about starting up a personal training program at KW Fitness?

"Give it a month!"

Keep up the awesome work, Joe! We are so glad you're here ☺
