🦃2023 Turkey Shootout Race Recap🦃
This was the race of some serious hard luck for the 01B.
There were 38 drivers entered in the Open Outlaw Class for this year’s Turkey Shootout! What an incredible turnout!
Night One: Friday, 11/24/23 Heat Race then Invert Heat Race.
· Drew 15 in the pill draw
· Heat Race; 7 Drivers, 8 Laps:
Started on the pole in the 4th of 5 heat races for the Opens. The beginning of bad luck. Brayson’s steering wheel got hung up on his seat belts, he was unable to turn the wheel and hit the wall in turn 2 during lap 4 of 8. This hit caused damage to his right front. DNF. We were very lucky that nothing worse happened to him because of this. Our crew chief was able to get the right front fixed & ready for the Invert Heat.
· Invert Heat Race; 7 Drivers, 8 Laps:
Started last in 7th place since they inverted the field from the Heat race. More bad luck. At the beginning of lap3, Brayson’s exhaust pipe cracked in half. Blowing super hot air all over Brayson, he pulled into the infield. DNF.
So unfortunately, Brayson was not able to complete either heat race, which obviously did not set him up well for day 2. But we have to give a huge shoutout to Tobey Sampson for welding Brayson’s exhaust pipe for us so that he would be ready for day two! This is the definition of a race family. People jumping in at a moment's notice, willingly giving their time & resources to help another driver. That’s what it is like being in a dirt track racing family, and it’s priceless!
Night Two: Saturday, 11/25/23 Feature Alphabet Soup for the 01B, and another day of bad luck.
· D Feature: 12 Drivers, 10 Laps, Top 4 drivers transfer to the C Feature.
Started outside pole. After several restarts in the first couple of laps, Brayson was able to get out front, lead the majority of the D feature, and he won! Locking in a transfer spot into the C Feature!
· C Feature: 12 Drivers, 10 Laps, Top 4 drivers transfer to the B Feature.
Started 5th row inside, in 9th place. When you’re starting in the back of the field, it seems like the key to a successful race is to “stay out of the sh*t” and be patient as you work your way through the pack. Brayson did just that & worked his way up to 4th place. Unfortunately, Brayson made a mistake in turn 2. Got into the wall & wrecked. He was perfectly fine, but the 01B car sustained quite a bit of damage, and that ended his weekend. DNF.
It's going to take quite a bit of work to get the 01B put back together and race ready again. But our crew chief is already hard at work swapping out the chassis and ordering parts.
Even though this weekend did not go as planned, Brayson still had a great weekend doing what he loves & seeing all of his friends. Most importantly, Brayson is safe even after each incident he faced.
