Radio range depends on much more than the radio itself.

Terrain, buildings, antenna height, antenna placement, frequency, power, interference and even weather conditions can affect your actual range.

There’s no magic number for radio range.

Your environment matters.

VHF or UHF — what’s the difference?

VHF generally performs well over open areas and can be a great choice for outdoor, rural, agricultural, and public-safety applications.

UHF tends to perform better around buildings and dense environments.

Neither one is automatically “better.” The right choice depends on where and how you’re using it.

A quick inspection now can save you from chasing a radio problem later.

Your antenna isn’t just an accessory — where you put it matters.

The right antenna in the wrong location can hurt your performance. Roof mounting, proper grounding, cable routing, and keeping the antenna clear of obstructions can all make a difference.

Before blaming the radio, check the antenna system!

Good radio + bad antenna = bad results.

Bad signal? Check the simple stuff first.

Before you start changing radios, antennas, or blaming the weather, take a look at your connections.

🔧 Check your coax connections
📡 Inspect the antenna for damage
🔌 Make sure power connections are tight
⚡ Check for corrosion or loose grounds
📻 Make sure you’re actually on the correct frequency

A lot of “radio problems” aren’t radio problems at all.

Sometimes the fix is as simple as finding the loose connection you didn’t know was there.

Check the system before you replace the system.

SWR Matters More Than You Think

If your radio isn’t getting out like it should, don’t assume the radio is the problem. One of the first things to check is your SWR (Standing Wave Ratio).

A high SWR can:
• Reduce your transmit range
• Cause poor audio quality
• Put unnecessary strain on your radio’s finals over time

A good target is:
âś… Under 2.0:1 is usable
âś… Around 1.5:1 or lower is even better
âś… Close to 1.0:1 is ideal

If your SWR is high, check:
🔹 Antenna mounting and ground
🔹 Coax for damage or loose connectors
🔹 Antenna tuning

A few minutes with an SWR meter can save you from expensive repairs and help you get the best performance from your radio.

Is your microphone sticking? It might be time for a good cleaning.

I learned this the hard way. One time I had a stuck microphone while I was out walking through the woods with my deer dogs. Since I was away from the truck, I had no idea my radio had been transmitting the whole time. It took a few hours before I realized what had happened!

A soft brush, mild soap, and warm water can help remove dirt and grime from around the push-to-talk button. Just be careful not to let water get inside the microphone, and allow it to dry completely before using it.

While you’re at it, inspect the microphone cord for cuts, make sure the connector is secure, and verify the push-to-talk button moves freely. A few minutes of maintenance today can prevent communication problems when they matter most.
