Not every kid walks onto the mats ready to jump right in. Some need a little more time to warm up, and that's exactly the kind of student we love working with.

One of our moms, June, told us she was nervous before her daughter Juliana's first class, worried that Juliana's quieter side might hold her back. It didn't take long to see the opposite: Juliana found her own rhythm and made the class routine hers.

When we asked one of our students what she loves most about training, she didn't talk about winning.

"My favorite thing to do on the mats is being kind to other people, being kind to the new kids, and always respecting the coaches. And I like fighting too."

She talks about her coach, Professor Jackson, the same way: always honest, always kind, and someone who cares even when a student gets hurt.

And when we asked why she wants to become a black belt one day, her answer wasn't about the belt.

"I want to train harder, go to tournaments, and one day be a black belt so I can teach all the kids, even the new kids."

That's the kind of student we're building here, one class at a time.

Eric spent 20 years in the military and retired as a Master Sergeant, an E8. He led people for a living, and jiu-jitsu still gave him a different kind of confidence.

He started at 46, pushed by his younger brothers, expecting an intimidating room. Instead he found people cheering him on from day one. Now he's a black belt under Professor Jackson Nagai, and his advice is simple: you'll never feel ready, so start anyway.
