Thanks to Upland Chapter, Silverbay Gundogs & Michael Willoughby for taking the time and effort as a first time handler to learn and train Doc.
Michael acknowledges without the help of others in his community he could not have done it all. Upland Strong!

Upland NAVHDA May 2–3 Test Recap 🐾

What a weekend! We had the privilege of watching some incredible dog-and-handler teams step up to the line and show the results of their hard work and dedication.

🔹 Utility: 3 dogs tested — 2 Prize I, 1 Prize II🔹 Gun Dog: 6 dogs tested — 1 Prize I, plus several Prize II & III🔹 Natural Ability: 5 dogs tested — Prize I’s and Prize II’s across the board

We are so proud to be part of a community that continues to support and grow our small chapter. The progress, teamwork, and passion shown this weekend is exactly what NAVHDA is all about.

A huge thank you to our outstanding judging team — Chris Hairie (Senior Judge, GA), Gabriel Awbrey (Acting Senior), and Mrs. Anne Nyberg — for your time, expertise, and dedication to maintaining the standard.

We also couldn’t do this without our incredible volunteers and the continued use of Prado Dog Park — your support makes these events possible.

And to the trainers: thank you for continuing to mentor, motivate, and prepare our handlers and dogs for success. It shows.

We’re already looking forward to seeing everyone back at it next month for our June test!

Teaching a “hold” and “carry” builds the foundation for a reliable retrieve—calm, controlled, and complete from pickup to delivery.

Process (short version):
Start in a quiet space with low distraction. Introduce an object (like a dowel or bumper) and place it gently in the dog’s mouth. Support the chin if needed and calmly cue “hold.” At first, reward even a second or two of stillness—no mouthing or dropping. Gradually increase duration before rewarding.

Once the dog understands holding, add movement. Begin with short steps at heel while the dog maintains the hold. Keep sessions short and positive. If the dog drops it, calmly reset—avoid turning it into a game of chase. Over time, progress to picking the object up from the ground and carrying it back to you, finishing with a clean delivery to hand.

Benefits:
A solid hold/carry prevents sloppy retrieves, dropping early, or hard mouth (damaging birds). It creates consistency and confidence, especially in more advanced work like blind retrieves or NAVHDA testing. Ultimately, it ensures your dog finishes the job every time—controlled, steady, and reliable.

The bar keeps getting higher 🔥

This past Invitational Clinic hosted by Upland NAVHDA was one for the books. The level of dog work, the dedication from handlers, and the insight from visiting judges continues to push our chapter forward here on the West Coast.

Since our chapter’s conception just two years ago, we’ve made it a priority to give back to our handlers—providing and handler bags to celebrate the hard work and success earned through NAVHDA. It’s a small way to recognize the big commitment it takes to train and test at this level.

We all feel the rising costs—fuel, birds, travel—but our mission remains the same: keep our tests and training opportunities as accessible and affordable as possible for those who want to step to the line with their dog.

We truly appreciate the feedback from visiting judges and handlers. That input helps us grow, improve, and continue setting the pace out here on the West Coast.

See you at the next test 💪🐾
