There’s more to this turquoise water than meets the eye.

This is **Sunwapta Falls in Jasper National Park, Alberta**, where glacier-fed water rushes through a narrow limestone gorge along one of the most spectacular stretches of the Canadian Rockies.

The Sunwapta River is fed by meltwater from the **Athabasca Glacier**, part of the Columbia Icefield. Here, thousands of years of moving ice and water have helped shape the landscape into the steep valleys, exposed rock and powerful waterfalls we see today.

Sunwapta Falls itself exists because of the way glaciers carved this part of the Rockies. As the ice retreated roughly 8,000 years ago, valleys of different depths were left behind. Where the smaller Chaba Valley meets the much deeper Athabasca Valley, the change in elevation creates the dramatic series of falls and the deep limestone gorge below.

And the adventure doesn’t have to end at the main viewpoint. A trail follows the river downstream to **Lower Sunwapta Falls**, a quieter series of three waterfalls surrounded by forest and mountain views.
