DNA analysis of a horse tooth fragment uncovered at the 16th-century Spanish settlement of Puerto Real on Hispaniola has revealed a surprising transatlantic legacy. Genetic evidence shows that the animal’s closest living relatives are the wild horses roaming Assateague Island, off the coasts of Maryland and Virginia.

This finding strongly supports long-standing theories that Assateague’s feral horses descend from Spanish colonial stock animals that either escaped shipwrecks, were deliberately released, or were abandoned during early colonial ventures. Horses were central to Spanish expansion, transforming transport, warfare, and agriculture in the Americas.

This discovery ties a modern coastal herd directly to the earliest phase of European colonization, showing how colonial history can survive not only in ruins and documents, but in living animals. The Assateague horses are not just local icons—they are genetic echoes of the Age of Exploration.
