Congratulations Chief Cross.
Fire Chief Daniel Stamborski is pleased to announce that Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Cross has been selected for appointment as the next Fire Chief of the Chicopee Fire Department.
Deputy Chief Cross is a lifelong Chicopee resident who joined the Chicopee Fire Department in 1996 and has proudly served the community for over three decades, rising through the ranks as Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Chief since 2015. Most recently, he earned the highest overall score in the Civil Service Assessment Center process.
Deputy Chief Cross is a graduate of the Department of Fire Services Chief Fire Officer Management Program and holds an Associate Degree in Fire Science. He has served on the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Hazardous Materials Response Team for 17 years and currently serves as technical support and truck manager. He is also an instructor at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy.
Throughout his career, Deputy Chief Cross has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as the Department’s Executive Officer for more than two years, helping guide and support the department through unprecedented challenges. He has also secured more than $1.8 million in state and federal grant funding to support the department and its mission.
In addition to his service in the fire department, Deputy Chief Cross is an active volunteer with the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, helping address food insecurity in our communities.
