NorCal Roller Derby Takes Thrilling 109-107 Victory Over Central Coast Roller Derby
CHICO, CA | NorCal Roller Derby defeated Central Coast Roller Derby, out of San Luis Obispo, 109-107 in a thrilling, back-and-forth bout that came down to the final jam at Cal Skate in Chico.
The event was not just to showcase roller derby, but was also a fundraiser and book drive for the Butte County Chico Library after recent events caused its closing.
From the opening whistle, the two teams battled fiercely, trading scoring runs and leads throughout the game. Neither team was able to pull away for long, as Central Coast and NorCal repeatedly answered each other's scoring opportunities. Half time score was 59 NorCal to 54 Central Coast.
With just nine seconds remaining on the game clock, NorCal managed to tie the score, setting up a dramatic final jam with the bout still completely up for grabs.
NorCal came through in the final jam, scoring the points needed to take the lead and secure the 109-107 victory. The finish capped an exciting contest that kept fans cheering, and guessing until the final whistle.
The bout also carried special significance for the Chico roller derby community, as it was the final roller derby game ever held at Cal Skate.
Cal Skate has been a longtime home for skating and roller derby in Chico, providing a venue where skaters, officials, families, and fans could come together. The facility has been sold and will reopen as another skating rink, but roller derby will no longer be held at the location.
That made the final bout both a celebration and a farewell. While the game marked the end of roller derby at Cal Skate, the NorCal Roller Derby team has found their new home at SIlver Dollar Fairgrounds.
The night ended with NorCal Roller Derby celebrating a hard-fought victory, while both teams and their fans took a moment to recognize the significance of closing out an important chapter in Chico roller derby history.
