Most people don’t suck at fly fishing…

They’re just overcomplicating it.

Too much gear. Too many opinions. Not enough clarity.

If you actually want to catch more fish, you need to simplify things—and focus on what matters.

I broke it all down here 👇

Most anglers think indicator fishing is just “watch the bobber and hope.”

That’s usually why they struggle.

The truth is, good indicator fishing is one of the most effective — and technical — ways to catch trout and steelhead consistently in Northern California. Reading depth, controlling drift, adjusting weight, understanding current seams… it all matters way more than most people realize.

I put together a new article breaking down indicator setups, common mistakes, and how to actually fish them effectively instead of just floating flies around aimlessly like a lost tourist on a river.

If you’ve ever wondered why some anglers always seem to hook fish while others just keep “practicing casting,” this one’s for you.

Whether you’re chasing trout on the Sacramento, steelhead on the Feather, or just trying to stop donating flies to the river gods, this will help shorten the learning curve.

Every cast is an adventure.

Whether you’re new to nymphing or looking to refine your technique, a day on the water breaking down indicator fishing in real time can completely change how you approach a river.

You do not need a $4,000 setup, a beard that smells like river water, or the ability to tie 37 knots blindfolded to start fly fishing.

You just need the essentials… and maybe slightly less emotional damage than the average angler. 🎣

I put together a beginner-friendly guide covering the gear that actually matters, what you can skip, and how to avoid wasting money on stuff that’ll end up collecting dust in your garage next to your “future drift boat project.”

If you’re brand new to fly fishing—or know someone who keeps saying “I wanna try it someday”—this is a good place to start.

Ever feel like you’re doing everything right… but the fish just aren’t cooperating?

Nine times out of ten, it’s not your casting. It’s not your fly rod. It’s not even the river.

It’s what the trout are actually eating.

I put together a breakdown of the real “bug buffet” happening in Northern California rivers—mayflies, caddis, stoneflies, midges, and the stages most anglers completely miss.

Once you start thinking in terms of what’s actually on the menu, fly selection stops being guesswork and starts making a lot more sense.

If you want to catch more fish consistently (and stop second-guessing every cast), this is a good place to start.

Every cast is an adventure.

Unlock the secrets of trout feeding habits with The Bug Buffet: A Fly Angler’s Guide to Trout Food. This in-depth resource explores the life cycles, emergence patterns, and fishing strategies for mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies—three of the most important aquatic insects for fly fishing. Shad season in Northern California has a way of turning a normal day of swinging flies into controlled chaos.

One second everything feels dialed in… the swing is perfect, the water looks good, you’re feeling pretty confident in your life choices.

Then a shad shows up and turns your fly rod into a metronome of panic.

Drag screaming. Rod bent. Line doing gymnastics. You just standing there thinking, “Well… that escalated quickly.”

Not a steelhead. Not a trout. Just a silver little chaos machine that hits flies like it owes them money.

And honestly… it never gets old.
