Hu Shin Kai Karate

Hu Shin Kai Karate Hu Shin Kai is an authentic Shotokan Karate dojo in Chicago. Taught by former US national team member, Toshihide “Tony” Nakamura Sensei.

Hu Shin Kai is a "dojo", a training place, for traditional Shotokan Karate. Master Gichin Funakoshi

To understand the traditional Shotokan Karate, it is important to understand its roots. Shotokan Karate is one of the four major styles of traditional Karate founded by the master Gichin Funakoshi (November 10, 1868 – April 26, 1957). It is arguably the most known and practiced style of karate. Mas

ter Funakoshi dedicated his entire life to the pratctice of karate, and his pupil respectfully began calling his karate "Shotokan" Karate. "Shoto" was his artist name, and "kan" translates to "home" in Japanese. Hu Shin Kai

We consider the physical training as a basis but focus our attention to one's personality, as our goal is to train to become a better person as a whole. The name "Hu Shin Kai" means the following:

"Hu" means wind, representing our style that can be used in various ways similar to the nature of wind. It is also a reference to the location of the dojo, the “Windy City.”
"Shin" means mind, demonstrating our dedication and emphasis on the mental aspect of Karate-Do. "Kai" means association or group.

🖥️ Introduction to Programming – Hu Shin Kai Alumni Foundation | March 14, 2026

We are thrilled to share that the Hu Shin Kai Alumni Foundation recently organized an Introduction to Programming course for the children and youth members of our dojo!

Using the beginner-friendly Scratch programming platform, our young members got their first exciting taste of coding in a fun and engaging way. The course was led by two highly accomplished professionals from the gaming industry — one holding a Ph.D. and the other a Master's degree in Computer Science — ensuring a top-quality, expertly delivered learning experience.

Every participant did a fantastic job, and the enthusiasm in the room was incredible to see!

At Hu Shin Kai, we believe in nurturing the whole person. While Karate builds discipline, respect, and strength of character, we are equally committed to empowering our members with skills that will help them thrive beyond the dojo. This is just one of the many ways we strive to go above and beyond for our community.

Welcome to our "not so new" Shodan, Ricardo Vasquez Jr.
He has been training with us for years with dedication. He passed his Hu Shin Kai Shodan exam in May, and he finally received his certificates and belt today! Our certificate comes from Japan, and it's a special paper used for temples and shrines that is designed to last for years. Certificates are written by a professional artist with Nakamura Sensei's signature and stamps (Japanese Hanko). Belts are made in Japan from the raw material, and embroideries are hand-sewn. We invest a lot because we keep a high standard for our black belts, and Ricardo definitely deserves it.

Congratulations, Ricardo!

I am very saddened by the news that Master Yutaka Yaguchi has passed away. He spent the last hours of his life with people who were very close to him, and he peacefully rested with his family members on his side.

He was a great Karate-Ka, but he was a wonderful person above all. He was training Karate until the very end, and he was looking forward to coming to Hu Shin Kai Karate Dojo to instruct in our seminar. I have known Yaguchi Sensei since my teenage days, and I was extremely lucky to be able to reunite with him recently. As one of the last people to train with him, I will never forget a single moment that I spent with him.

I must admit that I am devastated, but I know that Yaguchi Sensei would not want me to stop my journey. I will head to the Dojo and try to train what he taught me. Deep condolences to his family. What a loss to the Karate and Budo world.
Yaguchi Sensei, thank you very much for making a big impact on my life and for your kindness, and it was truly my honor to know you. Please rest in peace.
