🌊 The lakefront can fool you.

A glassy harbor doesn’t always mean a calm Lake Michigan. In Chicago, conditions can change fast — with shifting winds, building waves, and storms that roll in quicker than expected.

Before you leave the dock, always check the marine forecast for wind speed, wave height, storms, and any Small Craft Advisories.

Know the forecast before you go.

😎 No wake means no wake.

As the season gets busier, please remember that no wake zones are there to protect everyone on the water — boaters, paddlers, dock crews, passengers, and vessels tied up in the harbor.

A kind reminder that all Chicago Harbors are no wake zones. Please be observant of all signs and show respect to your fellow boaters.

Thanks for helping keep the Chicago Harbors safe for everyone this summer.

Chicago’s lakefront has always been more than a shoreline. It’s a working waterfront, a gathering place, a gateway, and a source of identity for generations of Chicagoans.

On National Maritime Heritage Day, we’re honoring the harbor history that helped shape our city — and the boaters, sailors, crews, clubs and waterfront communities that continue that legacy today.

Happy National Safe Boating Week from Chicago Harbors.

As the lakefront comes back to life for the season, a few small habits can make a big difference for you, your crew, and everyone sharing the water.

1. Wear your life jacket
Have properly fitted life jackets for everyone on board — and wear them when conditions call for it.

2. Check the forecast before you leave
Lake Michigan can change quickly. Wind, waves, fog, and storms can turn a good day into a dangerous one fast.

3. Know your required safety gear
Make sure your boat has the proper equipment on board, including fire extinguishers, navigation lights, sound-producing devices, throwable flotation, and visual distress signals.

4. Boat sober
Designate a sober operator. Alcohol, sun, wind, and motion can hit harder on the water.

5. Watch your speed and wake
Be especially mindful near harbors, breakwalls, mooring fields, paddlers, swimmers, and other boaters. All Chicago Harbors are a no wake zone.

6. File a float plan
Let someone know where you’re going, who’s with you, and when you expect to return.

7. Use your radio
Know how to use your VHF radio and keep it on while underway. Channel 16 is for distress and emergency communications.

8. Respect the lakefront community
Safe boating helps keep Chicago’s harbors enjoyable for everyone — boaters, paddlers, charter guests, shoreline visitors, and first responders.

9. Check your charter
All properly licensed charters are being given a green flag to fly this season—an easy way to visually check if your charter is vetted.

Here’s to a safe, fun, and memorable season on the water!
