Happy First Day Of Spring! This is an excellent time to discuss the meaning behind the name "Wing Chun" since springtime plays a very important part. As we mentioned in our last post, one of the first practitioners of the style was named Yim Wing Chun, and the style was later named after her. Now the translations for Wing Chun vary, some are: "beautiful hope in the springtime", "song of the springtime", or "spring chant". Our favorite, and the one from which we derive our name, is "eternal springtime". Spring is a time of growth, new beginnings, and when light begins to win out over dark. It is a beautiful and symbolic time and we are so proud to name our school after a Spring that has no end.

In honor of both Women's History Month and International Wing Chun Day, let's look back at the origin of our art.

It was developed centuries ago by a Shaolin Nun named Ng Mui based on her observations of a snake and crane fighting on a river bank. She taught her style to a young woman named Yim Wing Chun who was so talented that the style was later named after her.

Using economy of movement, a Wing Chun practitioner can overtake a larger and stronger opponent. It is effective for anyone regardless of gender, age, or physical ability.

"What should I train for when I'm at the gym?" When you decide to pursue martial arts you need to answer the fundamental question of, "What am I working out for?" Let's put it this way, have you ever seen a body builder going through an american ninja warrior obstacle course? Have you ever seen a drag racer built for straight line speed go through a track composed of twists and turns? There is a time and place for certain types of training when it comes to your body. There is nothing wrong with admiring the physical composition of a body builder who has trained to expose every ounce of muscle the body has to offer. In a way, it's quite similar to admiring a painting from your favorite artist. If you wish to compliment movement and function, you need to understand what it entails. Train for reality, the rest will take care of itself. Mass is vanity, function is life. Train accordingly.
