What We Learned As Kids But Forget As Adults...
We learn a ton of life lessons growing up. For various reasons some stick better than others. There's one in particular we should use much more than we do.
Stick with me for a quick story...
I met up with an old pal this past week. We've know each other for decades. Let's call him Rory.
You see, Rory is going through a tough time work-wise. Rory works as a package delivery driver. He was told recently the pay structure he was used to is going away.
He will now be paid per stop instead of paid per hour. As in when he delivers a package. The problem this represents for Rory is he has 2 hours of work to do to load the truck before delivering a single package. On top of that he typically works at least 9 hours a day. Often working 10 - 11 hours to deliver all the packages he's given. Overtime will no longer be paid either since he's paid per stop,
These changes will reduce his pay by as much as a 1/3.
The new pay structure won't cover his monthly bills mainly due to his health insurance premiums and home costs.
Rory told me all this because we're friends. I give him big props to be brave and tell me his struggles.
As he told me his story, it occurred to me I have another friend (let's call him Billy) in a different delivery business that might know of job openings in his company.
A quick text and call to Billy uncovered an opportunity. It turns out the company is gearing up for a sizable hiring campaign very soon. The job would pay substantially more.
Rory was able to find out where to apply. He's now is on his way seeking out a new job.
So, what the lesson here?
As we're growing up, we're told to ask for help if we need it. Our parents, teachers, coaches, and family are there for us.
Yet when we make to turn to adulthood, we stop asking for help. Especially when it comes to career and relationships. Partly because our society suggests we can figure it our on our own. But we shouldn't.
If Rory didn't confide in me, then he may not have discovered a new path. This new job would substantially increase his pay. A new life!
When life is throwing you lemons reach out to those you know have your back. Ask for help when you need it. Raise your hand.
This is where coaching can be instrumental in helping you reach your goals. It's not just ok to ask for help as adult. It's critical.
Remember asking for help allowed us to become the people we are today. A lesson worth repeating!
