Had pizza, drinks or dessert this weekend?
One meal isn't the problem. Turning it into a lost weekend is.

DON'T DO THIS NEXT:
1. Don't add punishment cardio
2. Don't wait until Monday to start over
3. Don't skip meals to "make up for it"

DO THIS:
Make your next meal normal again — protein, produce, carbs you enjoy, reasonable portion.

Save this for next weekend.

Which one do you always fall into?

Dad cardio is loading two car seats, a stroller and four kids just to leave the driveway.

Forget Zone 2. We’re in Zone 5 before the car even moves.

Our kids are watching more than our workouts.

They notice how we take care of ourselves, how we handle hard days and whether we keep promises to ourselves.

I don’t need them to think fitness is everything. I want them to see that taking care of your body is part of taking care of your life.

What do you hope your kids learn from watching you?

Nobody warns dads how easy it is to lose their friends after kids.

Life gets full. You stop reaching out. Months pass.

I didn’t need twenty new friends. I needed two or three dads I could actually text and be honest with.

Brotherhood doesn’t happen by accident.

What has helped you stay connected since having kids?

Busy week? Don’t turn one missed workout or one big meal into a lost week.

Shorten the workout. Move it. Use a backup. Make the next meal normal again.

No punishment. No Monday restart.

What usually throws your week off?

9:37 PM Saturday.

The kids won’t go down, and I don’t have time to play bartender.

This is why I keep a batch in the freezer.

To make it in a 750 ml bourbon bottle:

• Remove 1/2 cup (4 oz) of bourbon to make room
• Add 3 oz turbinado simple syrup
• Add 1 oz Angostura bitters
• Gently mix and freeze for at least 6 hours

Pour 2.75 oz over a large cube.

That makes about nine pours. Based on what I paid, that’s roughly $3 each instead of $18 at a bar.

I train, eat pretty well and still enjoy an Old Fashioned sometimes. That’s what realistic fitness looks like to me.

Save this for your next Saturday night.

I don’t need a Lamborghini or a Rolex.

At 44, these six things mean a lot more to me than they did at 24:

1. Quiet coffee before the house wakes up.
2. A workout I can finish before dad duty.
3. Dinner at 5 PM. The old people were right.
4. Completely ordinary time with my wife.
5. Watching my kids do what they love.
6. A body that still lets me join in.

Turns out a good life looks pretty ordinary while you’re living it.

My twins turn four today.

I still care about being strong, looking good and staying fit.

I just don’t want fitness to become the main event.

It’s supposed to give me more energy for everything—and everyone—else.

Fitness isn’t my whole life. It helps me show up for it.

The perfect workout you skip isn’t better than the short one you actually do.

When my schedule gets blown up, I don’t write off the whole week. I use a backup workout:

• 10 goblet squats
• 10 dumbbell floor presses
• 10 one-arm rows per side
• 10 dumbbell RDLs
• 20-second carry per side

Set a timer for 15 minutes and repeat at a controlled pace. Rest when needed and use a weight you can handle with good form.

Busy dads don’t need a plan that only works when the week goes perfectly.

Because eventually somebody has practice, work runs late, I only have 20 minutes, or I eat a meal that wasn’t exactly part of the plan.

That doesn’t mean my week is shot.

1. SHORTEN THE WORKOUT. 20 minutes still counts. I’d rather train short than skip because I can’t do the full workout.
2. MOVE IT — DON’T RESTART MONDAY. Miss Monday? Do the next workout when you can. The calendar doesn’t matter.
3. USE A BACKUP WORKOUT. A few big movements. Get some work in. Get back to dad life.
4. KEEP ONE BIG MEAL AS ONE BIG MEAL. Pizza, drinks, dessert, whatever — it doesn’t make the whole day or week a loss. Don’t punish it or “start over.” Make the next meal normal. If you’re naturally less hungry, eating a little lighter is fine — but don’t force compensation.
5. LOWER THE BAR — NOT TO ZERO. A short lift. A walk. Some mobility. A normal next meal. Keep the routine alive.

No punishment. No waiting until Monday. No restart required.

Consistency-ish beats perfect.

Save this for your next crazy week.
