Chicago's Legacy Kumu Hula

Chicago's Legacy Kumu Hula Honoring four Kumu Hula and Hula Practitioners who migrated to Chicago, Caroline Namahoe Ha`o, Bill "Ka`ulu" Charmin, Pat Kanaha Yamanuha, and Ed Kalahiki.

Recognized for their lineal connection to Kumu Hula in Hawai`i and Chicago's Legacy Hula. We seek to tell the story of how Hula has been upheld—preserved, perpetuated, and protected—in Chicago for generations. An attempt to document the arrival of Hula to Chicago highlight four Kumu Hula and Hula practitioners that lived here: Caroline Namahoe Ha`o, Bill “Ka`ulu” Charman, Pat Kanaha Yamanuha, and

Edward Kalahiki. And this FaceBook Page has been created as a collective contribution dispensary of old photos, hula events, articles, hula images, and recital programs associated with any one of the four Kumu Hula that portrays your part of their stories. We would love to hear from you and read about your experiences. We celebrate their ability to recognize their respective kuleana, combine their areas of expertise, and share their mana`o among themselves where it concerns Hula. Though not a traditional training in Hula from childhood to adulthood as in Hawai`i, these Kumu Hula and Hula practitioners realized it would require the sum of each person to plot a new Hula path for their children born and raised in the Midwest. Their impact on our Hula community has been sustaining; their Hula is recognizable today through their surviving students. Today, Chicago’s Kānaka continues to perpetuate this unique Hula lineage while organizing and increasing the visibility of the Hula community.

Kāhea kākou! Kulāiwi – Native Lands contemporary music & hula of Indigenous Hawai‘i performing tomorrow evening at the Old Town School of Folk Music! Szold Hall is located at 4545 N Lincoln Avenue, Chicago-60625. 773.728.6000 or Online to purchase tickets.

Allow me to share the scoops on this newly formed group. The group name is new, but the artists of Kulāiwi, are not! I took one look and realized that Uncle Kawika Kahiapo wasn't wearing his hat! Shawn Pimentel, who formed this group, returns to the Old Town as his last visit he performed with Kaumaka`iwa during the first Festival of Aloha that was captured live by CANTV (I think that one, yikes) back in 2012, got a haircut! And the lovely female voice you will hear in this group is one of the three voices of Na Leo Pilimehana! I kid you NOT. Joined by Pono Fernandez as Hula for all you Hula enthusiasts as well, it will be worth it.
Please share and come out and show our warm Chicago support no matter what season, for Kulāiwi!

Let's go-Hana Hou!
