Hoosier Daddy Racing - Motorcycle Landspeed Team

Hoosier Daddy Racing - Motorcycle Landspeed Team Hoosier Daddy Racing is an Indiana based, father & son, motorcycle landspeed racing team that compet The rest of the story is told in this web page.

Hoosier Daddy Racing began in 2011 After father Drew Gatewood ( who works as an AMA/F.I.M. technical steward at Bonneville) flew out son Clayton to watch motorcycle landspeed racing for a couple days. While there, Clayton was offered the chance to make a couple passes down the racecourse aboard a Buell and with loaned riding gear (Thank you to Tom "Santa Claus" Anderson the founder of Buell Brothe

rs Racing), after which the seed was planted. Upon returning home this father and son immediately began rebuilding dad's '77 XLCR Cafe' Racer for use in 2012.

Just read the new 2017 AMA Supplemental Regulations,
and looked in the records chapter. :-)

Who will show up at Bonneville this year
to try and beat that record.
We'll find out this coming August.

VALVE TRAIN WEIGHT......
What helps our HDR XG750LSR engine rev high? Perhaps an Apples to Oranges comparison, but still interesting. 2 intake & 2 exhaust valves (Titanium), 86.9 grams. 1 Shovelhead intake valve (steel) 106 grams.

Dateline - winter of 2013 - After we first spoke with Kris Schoonover in Milwaukee regarding our proposed sponsorship by Harley-Davidson Motor Co. which included a new motorcycle a bit of time passed before our next meeting. So, I decided to send along this photo saying how we had ordered the handlebars, and one could see we just needed a few more items to complete our original XG500 race bike. HA! Thanks again Kris, it all turned out good.

TBT - 2011 at the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials, and Clayton's first year at Bonneville. I flew him out for a couple days, and our friend Tom (Santa Claus) Anderson of Buell Brothers Racing told him to just bring a pair of boots. He would provide the bike, leathers, gloves, and helmet. Clayton went out for a couple RWB runs and that was all it took. :-)

END OF YEAR UPDATE......
Hoosier Daddy Racing's Harley-Davidson XG750 returns home for the winter to be completely gone through from stem to stern.

After our engine failure at 10K RPM we have been put on hold until recently when everything was brought home to our shop.
Unfortunately, as a result of slumping sales this year from our major sponsor the HDR race program was cut loose from any future assistance. However, we will be moving forward during these upcoming icy, frosty, snowy months with hopes of being back together, and reaching our goal of 100+HP to set more records.

Aside from engines and motorcycles we would like to wish you all the very best during this Holiday Season, and offer thanks to all of those who will be staying onboard with Hoosier Daddy Racing, as we have a considerable list of pieces to acquire. As you can see Santa is going through said list. Not sure what he will put under our Christmas tree, but hoping for more than coal. ;-)
Ho Ho Holy Cow, we sure like motorcycle racing. :-)

HDR October Update......
Though this photo doesn't look like much, it actually means alot.
Our XG750 is apart, and all repairs being made with many months before its next running. So, we are pleased to have found weak links in the chain of HP gain without it happening at full speed, and knowing the bike will be back together and tuned with more than ample time before it hits the racetrack once again. Thanks to all of our awesome sponsors who have stuck with us. Clayton Gatewood (e.g. HDR rider/tuner, & all around good guy) is leading the way for the 750 engine build.

Bonneville was still fun even though HDR didn't have a horse in the show. Clayton (on left) rode his Harley from Wisconsin to Bonneville to spend the week, and help out wherever needed with Jody Anderson (center) and his S&S BIG inch XL that went 198+ MPH. Hoosier Daddy on the right worked as AMA/F.I.M. technical steward and had the grateful job of measuring this engine after an AMA record was set. Bike was originally built by Tom "Santa Claus" Anderson (yellow shirt) who is the founder of Buell Brothers Racing, and is now tuned by Big Jan Smith (tallest of us all).
Congrats to Jody, and the whole S&S team! :-)

* * PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF PERFORMANCE TO THE LIMIT * *

No engine builder ever knows the limit until something gives, and at 10K RPM on the dyno bad things can happen in a hurry (e.g.-valves open and close more than 80 times per second!!!!) Unfortunately for us there is not enough time to complete all repairs before Bonneville. However, the good news is we now know areas for improvement, and how to make them stronger. Plus, thankfully it occurred on the dyno, and not on the racecourse. Motorcycle racing is not a sprint, but a long term commitment that we all enjoy, even with setbacks. Lastly, HDR knows there is no other place to be than Bonneville at this time of year, so we will still be on the salt helping other riders and hoping for a week of Fast & Safe motorcycle landspeed racing. :-) :-)
