The very first football card!

Harry Beecher is not a household name among football fans or even collectors, but he holds the distinction of being featured on the very first football card. It was part of the fifty-card multi-sport N162 Goodwin Champions set issued by Old Judge and Gypsy Queen in 1888. He was no slouch on the gridiron either. Beecher, the great-nephew of author Harriet Beecher Stowe, led Yale to back-to-back national championships in 1886 and 1887 and was one of the greatest college quarterbacks of the 19th century. During one game in 1886, he scored 11 touchdowns himself!

This SGC VG/EX+ 4.5 example of Beecher's historic N162 Goodwin Champions card is absolutely stunning considering it's nearly 140 years old. It will be part of our Fall Catalog Auction, opening November 20.

REA's October Auction closed on October 18 and was led by a rare 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background with a Ty Cobb Back PSA POOR 1, which sold for $153,750.

This very attractive 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card featuring Hall of Famer John Ward ( #478-7 pose) is the only example of this card graded by PSA to date! Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher and later a standout shortstop for the New York Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League Baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward led the short-lived renegade Players League.

George Sisler doesn't get the plaudits he deserves when the topic of baseball's all-time greatest hitters comes up, but he finished his 15-year Major League career with a .340 average and more than 2,800 hits. Folks also forget that he batted over .400 twice, finishing with a .407 average in 1920, when he also tallied a then-record 257 hits, and an incredible .420 average in 1922 when he was named the AL MVP. Is he the most underrated pure hitter in baseball history?
