Masters at the Midway long over due recap @ Johnson County Fair, Gardner KS OnJuly 25th

Four boxes went across the KCBS table. One of them came back with the kind of card you keep.
Chicken — 6th place. We won our table. Three judges wrote 9-9-9 so half thought it wss perfect. That’s the box we’re proud of.

The rest of the day: Meh

Pork ribs — 19th
Pork — 22nd
Brisket — 24th
Overall — 20th

Not a trophy haul. A honest very mediocre cook. A glaze on the thighs, clean rib bones, pork sliced so the smoke ring shines, and brisket laid out waiting to be shown off. We took care of the part we could control in appearance and he rest was up to the judges.

Thank you to the Johnson County Fair, the KCBS reps, and the tables that sat those boxes. Crew stayed in the trailer and kept the pans moving. That’s the job. We’ll take a 6th in chicken and go back to work.

What's your favorite chicken dish for your house? We ate so many chicken thighs at the start of the year that the kids were complaining they would turn into a chicken. After some tips from competition friends it's drastically improved. Drop a picture of your latest bbq or cook you are proud of in the comments, while your there check out our Chicken Casserole recipe card.

Stop 3: Shenandoah ShenDig (Shenandoah, IA) 📍

We had two comps in July, starting at the ShenDig in Iowa. The big highlight? We finally took our first Brisket walk with a 7th place finish! 🐂🏆

Unfortunately for our brisket cook, he missed the walk. He took off before awards to ride a bicycle across half the state of Iowa (yes, you're reading that correctly)…. He also crashed. 🚲💥 Since Levi’s physically ok, we can all share in a laugh imagining that. 😂

We also did not get a picture of said brisket. When the turn-in window is ticking down, the 'gram does not eat first. 📸❌

Our second comp of the year was the first week of June, right in our own backyard at the Big Blue BBQ in Marysville, KS! Don’t let the hometown proximity fool you—this event brings in some of the absolute best teams in the entire KCBS. (We were cooking against 3 of the Top 10 teams in the nation, including the #1 team in the country! 🤯)

Needless to say, we were stoked to walk away with a 6th place Chicken call! 🍗 I guess it’s true that even a blind “black” squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

Back in April, we started the year down in Osage City, KS, at Smoke in the Spring. Because Osage was a qualifier for the inaugural BBQ World Cup—where the 2027 winner will take home a cool million dollars—this incredibly well-organized event brought out a fierce field of 103 teams. We came out of the gate swinging in '26, earning a highly sought-after Perfect 180 gold star and securing a 1st place victory in Pork!

It's been a while since we shared anything with you all! Summer has been in full swing, and when life gets this busy, we try to focus on just enjoying the ride—while doing our best to capture a few moments along the way. Keep an eye on the page, because we are about to drop several posts recapping our comps so far this summer!

Heck, we only get to celebrate 250 years of Independence once, so we are also smoking 100 half-pound burgers and adding hatch chili cheesy corn to tonight's offerings at the American Legion Post 227 Clifton, KS.

Bring a friend to play co****le at 6pm and grab some grub suporting Cliftons 4th of July fireworks.
