As I prepare to return to my full-time teaching job for another school year, I want highlight the importance of youth fitness development. This was my Summer Strength and Speed small group. They started working together 2-3 x a week at the beginning of Summer. We focused on running form, speed, and introducing solid fundamentals to strength training. All saw improvements in their 60 yd dash times, and the group also improved PRs in planks, push-ups, and/or pull-ups/flexed arm hang. As Fall comes upon, some will go to different schools, and all will play for different baseball teams, but they came together as a team over the Summer. The all improved their Sport and Health Related fitness, but they also learned how to support each other through adversity and challenge. We just finished our last 90 min workout and instead of going their separate ways, they decided to keep working and play some blitzball.
Building fitness and fitness habits now stay with kids through adulthood. Make it fun and center it on their interests and you'll build fit and healthy adults!
