On behalf of the academy sponsors, the Peninsula Soccer Officials Association (PSOA), and the Tidewater Soccer Referee Association (TSRA), and with the support of the Metro-DC-Virginia State Referee program, I am pleased to announce the first annual Virginia South Columbus Day Referee Academy on October 6-8, 2017.

The purpose of the Virginia South Referee Academy is to improve referee skills with particular attention to positioning, command presence, and game management. The desired candidates will have a proven record of commitment to the game of soccer. The academy is open to all Virginia South Area referees in good standing who are 16 and older, and who have at least 2 years of refereeing experience.

Some frequently asked questions:

When is the academy? There will be a training session on Friday night at 7 PM. You will be assigned matches on Saturday and Sunday. Your schedule will be one game on, followed by a one game off when you will be debriefed by your referee mentor/coach.

What is the cost of attending the academy? There is no cost to you. You will receive the full game fee for the matches you work.

How many games will I do? You will do 3 games on Saturday (Ref/AR1/AR2) and 3 games on Sunday (Ref/AR1/AR2)

Will I receive feedback on my matches? You will have a State Level Instructor or Assessor who will be mentoring/coaching you, and will debrief your team after every match.

What level of games are played in this tournament? This is a highly competitive youth tournament with matches through U19.

How will this academy help me get higher level matches? The Academy will give you an opportunity to work closely with mentors who will help you improve your referee skills, will provide input to the State Referee Committee, and who can help promote you with the SRC. In 2016, the PSOA hosted a referee academy, and 2 of the attendees were offered positions at the State Cup Finals based upon their performance at the academy.

Will food be provided? The academy will provide dinner on Friday and Saturday and lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Snacks and water will be available throughout the weekend. Attendees will also receive gifts.

If you will be 16 or older by October 6 and have at least 2 years’ experience as a referee, you are invited to apply for the academy. You can download the application at Academy Application in Word or Academy Application in PDF. Please email your application to the Virginia South Area Referee Administrator, Sean Kent, at [email protected].
