The cool part about hybrid training is that you can always shift gears.
I’ll be the first to admit: after I started adding running back into my training regimen, I got a little overzealous.
Bumped up the miles, and the paces a bit too fast (all while experimenting with new shoes).
I felt good, the endorphins were flowing,… until they weren’t. I felt pain. But my old, endurance-athlete brain took over and allowed me to push through the pain.
Reality is, I’m not endurance athlete I once was (10-15ish years ago!). And I’m happy about that. My body now is much stronger in different ways and my body composition is much healthier.
However. I’m not bulletproof-proof. And I’m not perfect. I make mistakes. This mistake is costing me 2 weeks of running.
But hybrid training allows me to simply shift my focus- and use these 2 weeks to work on pure strength- lifting hard and heavy.
And adding in a little mobility and accessory work to sure-up any other injury-prone areas.
Learning to love lifting, and getting STORNG over the past 5 years will always be a part of my fitness journey- just as running was and always will be.
You don’t have to be a one-trick pony. And I’m learning to appreciate that the more “tools in the toolbox” (different modalities of fitness) I have, the more indestructible (both physically and mentally) I will become. Diversity in your fitness regimen provides motivation to KEEP GOING and GROWING! - even when a challenge presents itself.
Can’t stop, won’t stop
