THE POWER OF HAVING THEIR ATTENTION

Look at this picture.
Hundreds of young men sitting on a gym floor.
No phones in their hands.
No drills happening.
No competition going on.
They are listening.

But here’s the question:
Did they simply have to sit there—or did the speaker earn their attention?

That’s the difference between having an audience and having an engaged audience.

P — PRINCIPLE
If you want people to hear your message, you first have to earn their attention.
Whether you're leading a team, teaching students, speaking to employees, coaching athletes, or presenting to an organization, people don't automatically connect with what you say.
You have to capture their attention before you can capture their heart.

S — STORY
This picture reminds me of one of the things I love most about coaching and speaking.
I don't want people simply sitting in a room because they're supposed to be there.
I want them leaning forward.
I want them wondering, “Where is he going with this?”
I want them seeing themselves in the story.
I want the message to become more than words coming from a speaker—it becomes something they feel, understand, and remember.
That's why stories matter.
A great story creates a bridge between what you're saying and who you're saying it to.

A — APPLICATION
At Power Point Coaching, we use the PSA Method:
PRINCIPLE — What do I want them to know?
STORY — How can I make them feel it and remember it?
APPLICATION — What do I want them to DO with it?
Because the goal isn't to give people more information.
The goal is transformation.

So before your next presentation, team meeting, practice, staff development, chapel, or keynote, ask yourself:
“Am I preparing to speak… or am I preparing to connect?”

Because when you have their attention, you have an opportunity.
When you have their engagement, you have influence.
And when you connect the Principle + Story + Application, you have the potential to create change.

THE SCOREBOARD DOESN’T ALWAYS TELL THE WHOLE STORY.

Last night, a team took the field with just 14 players because of injuries.

They didn’t get the win.
But according to their coach…
They won.
Not on the scoreboard.

They won in heart.
They won in resilience.
They won in believing in the foundation they had built.
They won by staying the course when things got hard.

Here’s what that coach shared with me:
“Bruce, thank you for all your encouragement. We knew we would be tested on the direction of our program when we took such a strong stance. Last night we played with 14 players due to injury. The boys fought with heart. The score doesn't show the win, but we are gaining good ground. Thank you for the foundation you gave us to start the season.”

THIS is why I believe investing in people matters.

A workshop isn't about what happens in the room that day.

It’s about what happens after you leave the room.

It’s about the conversations that continue.

The standards that remain.
The culture that gets stronger.
The leaders who step up.

And the people who choose to keep fighting when circumstances say it would be easier to quit.

Honored. Grateful. Excited.

I’m incredibly honored to be selected as part of the 2026–27 Accelerate Siouxland cohort!

I’m looking forward to the opportunity to come alongside other leaders from across the Siouxland community, learn from their experiences, challenge one another, build meaningful relationships, and grow together as leaders.

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about being willing to learn, listen, encourage, serve, and make an impact beyond yourself.

I’m especially excited about the opportunity to bring my passion for leadership, teamwork, culture, and encouragement to this group while also learning from some incredible leaders who are making a difference in Siouxland.
