You ABSOLUTELY DO NOT need expensive high-tech gear and massive trophy targets to enjoy a day on the river. These vibrant native species fight hard, require true patience to locate, and are an absolute blast on light tackle. Real skills win on the water, not your credit card statement.

There is a massive misconception out there that you have to spend a ton of money on fresh shad or fancy exotic baits just to land a trophy catfish.

This 23.4-pound blue catfish proved otherwise when it choked down a simple bunch of easy-to-get nightcrawlers right off the channel-side slope. Watercraft skill beats an expensive bait bucket every single day of the week.

There is a massive myth in the fishing world right now that you need a brand new rig off the showroom floor just to go out and catch trophy fish. Total nonsense.
This 1989 Sea Nymph Fish 'N Ski driveway project is paid in full, the 88hp Evinrude is officially barking, and we are heading to the river system very soon. Real watercraft skills beat high-tech price tags every single time.

I love having a boat. It has opened a ton of options for us. Especially in pursuit of certain species. My wife's favorite is Catfish which I do enjoy. However, many of you know that my favorite quarry are Carp.

I know a lot of people hate on these fish, but once you start trying to catch large ones on rod and reel? Man they are something different for sure!

As if it wasn't challenging enough, I decided to pursue these guys with the boat. Having more water available has helped a lot, but has been daunting as well. Between dodging bowfisherman and barges at night, to racing bass guys for prime locations during the day, it has been a thrilling experience so far. It has made for some awkward moments, some awesome power naps, and some different boat modifications to be consistently successful, but there is huge potential. To watch this non-traditional pursuit in action, keep an eye out on YouTube for some future videos about it.

Freddie makes what I think are some of if not the best rods in market for Catfish, Carp, and Striper. Heavy enough to handle big fish, but a soft enough tip to keep all catches fun. Just because your boat needs repair, does not mean you can't catch good fish from the bank. There is always something out there ready to be caught. Like this 28 pound common carp.

For those who didn't know, this is actually my favorite species to catch. There is a certain amount of challenge and finesse that is needed to land these bigger carp on rod and reel intentionally. I've always been intrigued by it.

This one fell for a Enzyme Treated Pineapple Peanut Soluble Boilie. Which is basically a air dried doughball that breaks down in the water. I also had probably the best net person on the planet. She also did a great job modeling the fish for me.

This particular batch of bait is from Ballie Baits. Good bait along with my favorite medium heavy rods of all time from FOA Customs and Gear, LLC .

Been a crazy year so far! Boat is down, but fishing is still happening! The FOA rods are still putting in the work. My favorite rods on the market. Definitely the most bang for your buck as a multispecies angler! Went carp fishing for an hour before the storms came in. Wound up with our biggest Blue Cat of the year so far, as well as our first Smallmouth Buffalo of 2026, and a decent sized Channel Cat. Shout out to Ballie Baits for supplying the bait used today!

We’ve all seen it on the water—the classic "fish kiss" before the release. Some do it for the 'gram, but for us, it's a deep-rooted tradition of saying thanks to the river.

If you're looking for that extra bit of luck on your next outing, give it a try—but learn from our mistakes! Those big catfish have sandpaper-like pads that can do a number on your face, and bluegill spines are no joke. Respect the fish, show some love, but keep your eyes on those fins!
