Simple Offensive-Defensive Combinations with doble baston

Yesterday there was a small town competition for knife, sparring that three of my students at the Lightspeed Saber Academy participated. A focus of my teachings there have been on Cinco Teros and I am proud to say that two of my students CUT through the competitors to make first and second! We will be improving their skills even more in the coming weeks on our 6pm, Wednesday classes - drop by and learn with us!

Foam Knife Sparring: Staying in and out of distance is one of the most important things you need to work on in sports arnis and in self defense. Learning to deal with this and applying it in play is a great way to start

Tara na! Laban na! To all my Filipino martial arts friends who are in Southern California, I am working with Lightspeed Saber Academy to bring knife fighting to a fun level where we can test fundamental skills while having a blast. We are testing a “hit and don’t get hit” ruleset and would love to see your participation and feedback for future events!

Cinco teros and Arnis de Abanico as they were taught to me share some commonality in this technique that is used to deflect a blade and obtain control over the opponent’s movement, it is something I hope to fine tune as I try to fight more in line with these systems instead of relying just in reflex

Performing Forms, Anyo, or Sayaw at the Sh**un Warrior Open Karate/FMA Tournament - funny thing about putting together Anyo is that I’m not specifically trained to perform any. While I do try to practice free flow “karenza” or carenza as they call it back in the Philippines, I wasn’t taught a specific performance routine for these kinds of events. So, I decided to do it spontaneously! It was a great experience and I am thankful the judges ruled in favor of my performance, one of my gold medals during this competition! I can’t wait to go back and try again.

Stick fighting Practice: the system of De Campo 123 is one I hold close to my heart for its simplicity. I do take liberties from time to time with it, but I’d like to believe that many of our De Campo practitioners can spot the elementary combos that I apply in my sparring
