Not every healing journey begins with clarity.
Sometimes, it begins with pain.

A client came to me not with a clear goal, but with a question: “Where do I even start?” She knew something wasn’t right—physically, emotionally, relationally—but nothing felt fully accessible yet.

What she could identify was this: every time she tried to increase her physical activity or train more consistently, she experienced pain in her legs and feet that would stop her progress.

So that’s where we began.

There comes a time in our evolution and maturation journey where we realize that simply naming the harmful patterns and dynamics causing us to experience dis-ease is not enough. There comes this inevitable next step. We've gone through all the shock and horror and rage and grieving and disorientation and deconstruction and we've come to terms with the fact that there is such brokenness in our world, in our selves, and in the people we were supposed to love and were supposed to love us but didn't or don't at times. We grapple with the shocking and exquisitely painful systems intentionally designed to create power imbalances and oppress and we come to accept that no matter how we strive we can't eradicate injustice completely. There comes this moment of realizing we have to learn to hold hope while also looking despair bravely in the face. Something deeper is required at that point than the old tools and frameworks we relied on.

After the caterpillar liquefies itself from the inside out, it reforms into a butterfly.... But once she emerges from her cocoon, she no longer eats the same food she did before. She's still herself but also radically not. Now she has to learn a new way to live and move in the world. So too do we once we reach this phase of our journey.

The work I do is for those individuals and couples looking for that next step, that next process. It's setting down control, surrendering to the divine, and looking inward in new and often paradoxical ways that then allow us to flow out unconditional love and actually move with the power to create the very transformation we so desperately wanted but couldn't influence before.

We like the symbology of the butterfly, we love to use the word "transformation" - but we don't speak much about the gritty realities of that process - it's a literal death of one way of being and a rebirth into a new one. It's messy, it's lonely, painful, and often can be quite scary! We don't have to do it all alone though. If you're looking for a guide on your journey of transformation, I'm here to walk with you.

Yesterday I spent the afternoon making sweet and spicy pepper jelly from homegrown serrano peppers for some new friends from church.

I didn’t wear gloves.

Twenty-four hours later, my hands are still warm, tingling, and burning.

Capsaicin doesn’t actually burn your skin—it simply convinces your nervous system that you’re touching fire. The heat lingers long after the peppers are gone.

As I sat with that today, I couldn’t help but wonder how often love works the same way.

When we choose to serve, to welcome, to forgive, to create beauty for someone else, we don’t walk away unchanged. Hospitality leaves traces. Compassion leaves fingerprints. Love always marks the hands that offer it.

Trauma marks us, too.

But here’s the difference: trauma often teaches us to close our hands, to protect ourselves from being hurt again. Christ continually invites us to open them instead.

Not because love is safe.

But because love is worth becoming.

One of the greatest gifts God has given us is not control over what happens to us. It’s the freedom to choose what spirit we carry into the world because of it, and the gift of how we respond.

I can’t always choose what has touched my hands.

But I can choose what my hands will do next with them.

Maybe that’s what redemption looks like—not pretending the fire never happened, but allowing it to transform us into people who still prepare a table, still extend a blessing, still choose radical love.

The Gospel is both sweet and fiery.

And perhaps that’s exactly what the world is hungry for.

So here’s my question for you today: What are your hands carrying—and what will they choose to carry next?
