On Tuesday evening at practice, the unthinkable happened. Our friend and teammate, Dan Medvid, passed away.
Dan joined the Charlotte Sharks more than 30 years ago, shortly after we began practicing at the aquatic center in 1991. Dan began playing Waterpolo in high school in Pittsburgh and later played with the Pittsburgh Renegades . Lucky for us, life brought him to Charlotte where he immediately became involved with the Sharks. He sat on the aquatic board for many years protecting Waterpolo’s best interests at the pool.
Dan was always known for wanting to take the swim off. In the 90s during the Eastern Water Polo League he was even awarded for winning the most swim offs of anyone that season. You could always count on Dan for a laugh or a joke. But you could also count on him to be there for you. Last year when one of our teammates was in the hospital he asked if Dan would come by with a few things. Including a toothbrush. Dan went out of his way to find the most obnoxious, pink & sparkly, toothbrush he could - he presented it proudly. That’s the kind of guy he was.
Dan is survived by his wife, Julia and children Sophia and Drew.
Personally, it’s hard to fathom a world without Dan. At practice on Tuesday I was handing out caps when he walked on deck, and I stopped and gave him a big hug. He said, “Always time for a Jess hug” ❤️ a good reminder that life is precious, you should love the people around you and not take them for granted.
RIP Dan. We love you.
