Insight into CLT training last week 👀
Theme of the week was vertical positioning - how we decide to position ourselves off our goal line based on the location of the ball, our distance from the goal and the opponent, and the most dangerous option at any point in time.
Zone 1️⃣: close/short range - inside the box where we’re closing angles and making ourselves as big as possible
Zone 2️⃣: long range - still shooting distance, but usually between 16-30 yds from goal where a shot over the top is dangerous as we have to cover both lateral space in the goal as well as protect the vertical space over our heads
Zone 3️⃣: transition range - slightly out of realistic shooting distance, but our decision-making when the ball is in this area largely depends on our starting position and the game moment. We can stay high if we’re safely in possession, but are likely starting to recover if a transitional moment is happening
Zone 4️⃣: support range - no danger, we can be high and support our team in possession as they look to create in the attacking third
Zone distances and starting positions will change from GK to GK based on many factors! Our GKs did a great job evaluating each situation and changing their position based on what they thought was dangerous on each touch by the opponent.
