Today, I came home and my daughter shared that she and her mom had been going back and forth again, but instead of reacting, I saw it as an opportunity to teach. We’ve been working on her three powers—preparation, attitude, and effort—so I asked her if she noticed how when her attitude drops, her effort follows, and suddenly she doesn’t want to prepare or do anything, and she paused and said, “Yeah, I see it.” That moment mattered, because awareness is the beginning of change. I gently explained that when her attitude shifts because of someone else, it means they’re in control in that moment—and she has the power to take that back. She’s only 10, so I don’t expect her to master it yet, but if she can see it now, she can change it later, and as a parent, that’s the real win—planting seeds of awareness so one day she can choose her response instead of being driven by others.
