In a previous post I spoke about how anger can be a secondary emotion to anxiety, which is true. โฃ
โฃ
What is also true is that anger can be a secondary emotion to depression as well. โฃ
โฃ
How is this so? ๐Ÿค” โฃ
โฃ
The symptoms of anxiety and depression have irritability in common. When anxious or depressed it is likely that one may experience irritability. โฃ
โฃ
In depression, oftentimes anger ๐Ÿ˜  is the after effect of what truly is sadness or feelings of hopelessness. ๐Ÿ˜ž โฃ
โฃ
In my time of helping others, when someone is expressing a lot of rage/anger, there are usually unmet needs. ๐Ÿ˜”โฃ
โฃ
I normally look to inquire more about that person, their history, what do their relationships look like, what kind of support are they receiving outside of therapy. โฃ
โฃ
All of these things make a grand difference. โฃ
โฃ
So if you or anyone close to you seems to be angry/irritable most days than not, treat them or yourself with compassion. ๐Ÿ’›โฃ

Ask perhaps what is the underlying root of this anger? โฃ

Most traumas induce a lot of shame and fear when thinking about even speaking about it. โฃ

It is the reason why most individuals shy away from it and/or donโ€™t speak upon it. โฃ

A plethora of research shows that simply speaking upon what happened is an effective and simple way of healing. โฃ
โฃ
Our mind, body, and soul need to release that traumatic event that occurred. One way to do that is to look at it, understand it, and find ways to overcome it. โฃ

There are three types of trauma. โฃ

When experiencing chronic or complex trauma we tend to go into a state of survival. โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿค” Think about it, how could we not go into a state of survival? If negative events continue to happen in our lives our mind, body, and soul are going to try to do anything to stay alive.๐Ÿ’›โฃ
โฃ
Due to this, we will sometimes fall into negative coping skills because we are merely trying to make it through to the next day. โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿซ FYI: 70% of adults in the US have experienced some kind of trauma (and those are the ones who have reported it!). Thatโ€™s 223.4 million people! โฃ
โฃ
It is very likely you and your loved ones having experienced some form of trauma. โ—๏ธโฃ
โฃ
You can also experience trauma away from the actual event such as seeing black individuals repeatedly hurt and killed on social media/tv. Another example was seeing the twin towers fall from our TVs in 2011. โฃ

If you are having a hard time seeing or admitting your traumas, simply put it on someone else. Imagine someone else in your life going through what you experienced. โฃ

Itโ€™s so important we reflect on all the greatness that surrounds us daily. โฃ

We have daily choices in life. First thing in the morning we have the choice to reflect on the positives. We have the choice to bring into light the beauty that surrounds us daily. โฃ

Gratitude is great for bringing your awareness to the present time. Seeing all the great things that are right in front of you (not what we are wishing for in our futures). โฃ
โฃ
Sometimes remaining positive and present is difficult when suffering from anxiety and depression that may be deeply rooted with our past traumas. โฃ
โฃ
When dealing with traumas, exercises like repeating this statement above and actually seeking the greatness around you can be extremely beneficial. It does take patience and practice to see the positive effects come into life. โฃ
โฃ
Along with great coping skills, we would also have to begin healing that deeper wound. โฃ

โฃIn my experience working with clients, anger ๐Ÿ˜ค is oftentimes a secondary emotion to fear/anxiety/feeling lack of control. โฃ
โฃ
Anxiety in general is the feeling of nervousness due to lack of control. Sometimes this may emotionally trigger a person to use force or anger to try and gain control of the situation. โฃ
โฃ
I also see a lot of individuals feeling like they have to defend themselves when others slander their reputation. โฃ
โฃ
This is a case by case topic, although my opinion is usually - why do we care so much? ๐Ÿค” โฃ
โฃ
For me, it really has more to do with lack of self belief, which is another issue that occurs a lot with anxiety. โฃ
โฃ
Lack of belief that we will be able to conquer/survive what may come. โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ˜ฅ ..What if this happens, what if that happens. โฃ
โฃ
Anger and anxiety have a lot in common. We cannot control what other people think of us. The only thing we can control is our behavioral reactions and how we think of ourselves. ๐Ÿ’›โฃ
โฃ
Are you confident in the person you are? Even if someone else doesnโ€™t see the great person you are, do you let it affect you because your stance on self could perhaps be stronger? ๐Ÿค” โฃ
โฃ

So how do we work on this? (The potential anger issue). โฃ

Bring awareness to your actions. Ask yourself if you sometimes tend to lose your cool due to fear of lack of control?โฃ
