You don’t have to guess what *might* work for your horse. That’s too much trial and error, and every error costs $50-$200, and weeks to months of struggle. Bit fitting gives you the chance to try different bits and compare how your horse goes, so you can make the best choice! It’s efficient and ultimately more economical. Reach out to get scheduled!

If your horse is acting a little off, take a look in the mouth. Sometimes behavior under saddle is linked to a mouth injury that isn’t immediately obvious. A friend runs a lesson program, and one of the ponies was fussy and not letting the student steer. My friend did some investigation and found a big laceration inside the mouth. The horse had a vet visit and some time off and is doing great.

Barrel joints are among my favorite mouthpieces, but determining if they are wearing out is tricky. Barrel joints are constructed like a ball and socket, so the wear is typically hidden until they are ready for replacement. If the bit has more movement than when it was new, or you can see any portion of the “ball” that’s inside the joint, get yourself a new one. Always better safe than sorry!
