The Peach Orchard Equestrian Academy is growing, and we’re looking to add a few dependable Barn Hands to our team!

We are currently looking for daytime and weekend help with feeding, turnout, basic barn chores, horse care, and keeping our facility clean and running smoothly.

We’re looking for people who are reliable, hardworking, comfortable around horses, and take pride in doing a job well. Horse experience is strongly preferred.

The Peach Orchard Equestrian Academy is looking for an experienced, dependable Barn Manager to join our team in South Gastonia, NC.

We’re looking for someone with strong horse knowledge who is reliable, proactive, organized, communicative, and comfortable leading a team.

This is a hands-on management position with horse care and welfare always coming first.

Pay adjusted for experience | Part-time | Approximately 25-32 hours/week

Stable Hands: Protecting the Equine Mouth

The quality of a rider’s hand has a direct biomechanical and welfare-related effect on the horse. Rein tension is transmitted through the bit to highly sensitive structures of the mouth, including the tongue, lips, commissures of the mouth, and bars of the mandible. Consequently, even relatively small changes in rein tension/movement can produce significant sensory input.

A stable hand should not be confused with a fixed hand. During motion, the horse’s head and neck undergo natural swing. An educated rider maintains elastic contact by allowing the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and fingers to accommodate this movement while minimizing unnecessary fluctuations in the reins. The objective is stability relative to the horse’s mouth—not rigidity relative to the rider’s body!

When the rider lacks stability or an independent seat, movement of the torso may be transferred through the arms and reins directly into the horse’s mouth. Repetitive, inconsistent, or excessive rein forces can compromise comfort and are associated with oral conflict behaviors such as mouth opening, tongue activity, head tossing, avoidance of contact, resistance….

From a welfare perspective, the horse’s mouth should never function as a point of balance for the rider. Developing an independent seat and steady hands allows the rider to communicate with progressively smaller forces while preserving the horse’s comfort.

Ultimately, sophisticated riding is not demonstrated by how much control can be exerted through the rein, but by how little pressure is required to achieve clear communication. The educated hand is quiet enough to protect the mouth, elastic enough to follow movement, and sensitive enough to recognize when the horse has responded.
