Choosing the right hunting blind

A hunting blind is a valuable tool for any hunter, providing concealment and shelter from the elements. But with a wide variety of blinds available, choosing the right one can be a daunting task. This guide will help you navigate the options and select a permanent blind that meets your specific hunting needs.
1. Protection from the elements
A good hunting blind should offer adequate protection from rain, snow, and wind. Look for blinds made with durable, UV and weather-resistant materials, especially if you hunt in areas with harsh weather conditions. Some popular options include high density polyethylene (HDPE), rotomolded linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), metal, and fiberglass. Consider features like tight fitting windows and doors to minimize drafts and leaks.
2. Service life and warranty
A quality hunting blind is an investment, so consider its expected service life and the manufacturer's warranty. Reputable brands offer strong warranties that cover defects in materials and workmanship. Longer warranties generally indicate a higher level of confidence in the product's durability.
3. Portability and ease of setup
If you need to relocate your permanent blind in the future due to loss of a hunting lease or if the game trail changes, portability and ease of setup are crucial. Preparation is key to a productive and enjoyable hunting experience. Here’s a plan to consider to help you get ready for the next deer season:
1. Reflect and Review
• Evaluate the Past Season: Reflect on your successes and challenges from the previous hunting season. Identify what worked well and what needs improvement.
2. Study Game Trails and Deer Patterns
• Scout Regularly: Spend time in the field during different times of the day and year to observe deer movement and behavior. Use the winter months to scout for deer trails, bedding areas, and feeding sites. Snow and lack of foliage can make deer sign more visible.
• Trail Cameras: Monitor existing trail cameras along game trails to capture deer activity and identify patterns. Relocate your trail cameras to new areas to gather information on deer movement and patterns.
• Analyze Data: Review the data collected from your trail cameras (direction of deer movement, temperature, wind direction, barometric pressure sun and moon conditions) to identify potential hunting spots for the next season.
• Map Your Findings: Create a detailed map of game trails, feeding areas, and bedding sites.
• Update Hunting Logs: Review your hunting logs and notes to gather insights on deer behavior, patterns, and hotspots.
3. Maintain and Prepare Hunting Blinds and Tree Stands
• Inspection: Thoroughly inspect your blinds for any varmint damage, leaks, rotted material, wear and tear, or entry points for varmints and insects. Also do a risk assessment of your blind or stand from a safety perspective. In our younger years some of us have a tendency to think we are infallible and take risks that we should reassess as we get older and wiser so we can live to hunt another day.
• Removal: Remove tree stands from the tree to minimize tree damage and closely inspect straps for deterioration and store the straps out of the weather to extend their life.
• Repair: Fix any issues or leaks and replace rotted material to ensure longevity and your safety. Repair or replace seat cushions and foam cushioning if needed. Some blind manufactures recommend storing their blinds in the shade or under cover in the off season to extend their life.
• Installation: Setup new blinds for the upcoming season as early as possible for the game to adjust to it.
• Clearing: Clear debris around your blind for ease of access. Clear existing shooting lanes and cut additional lanes if needed.
4. Develop a Food Plot Strategy
• Minerals: Provide a source of key minerals, including dicalcium phosphate and trace minerals especially in the late winter and early spring.
• Soil Testing: Conduct soil tests to determine pH levels and nutrient needs.
• Lime and Fertilize: Based on your soil test results, apply lime and fertilizer to adjust soil pH and nutrient levels.
