Tomorrow, September 3, Army Football will represent the 3rd Infantry Division during the Army vs. Coastal Carolina football game in Conway, S.C.
Cadet John Mitchell, Class of 2025, is an International Affairs and Spanish double major from Winston Salem, N.C. He is a member of the Writing Fellows Program, Model Speech and Parliamentary Debate Team, and the Black and Gold Leadership Forum.
Before coming to West Point, Cadet Mitchell was an active-duty soldier and served as an indirect-Fire Infantryman (11C) assistant gunner with 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division (3-67 AR, 2ABCT, 3ID) at Fort Stewart, Ga., from 2018-2020.
“My then team leader, Spc. Hughes, inspired me to further pursue commissioning through West Point. When I was in a mortar platoon, especially during periods of high op-tempo, it was Spc. Hughes that instilled in me the work ethic and grit expected for any Infantryman, especially in moments of high stress. It is these values along with the obvious care for his subordinates I observed that inspired me, and I plan on returning to the Infantry to continue to inspire soldiers in the same way.
Now that I’m here, I am inspired by this academy constantly. All the resources that are available to us as cadets are more than any student in the United States could hope for. The staff here are incredible as well. . .the combined knowledge of civilians and experienced officers is of great benefit to the prospective officers that the academy contributes to the active-duty Army. Lastly, I’m just grateful to be afforded the opportunity to be here and commission, especially as someone that’s prior service."
