Happy Pilates Day!

Here’s a picture of me doing a cool bendy thing on my beloved A2.

In all seriousness though, Pilates isn’t about doing cool tricks and nobody cares.

Pilates saved my life 8 years ago. I’ll spare you the melodrama but it pulled me out of a really dark place and gave me a purpose that was more enriching than dancing on a stage. It taught me connection, empathy and how to really love people.

I feel so fortunate to wake up every day and whole heartedly love my work.

And while I’m at it - just wanted to say thank you to this wonderful community of movers and shakers here on the IG. I have learned so much from you all. 🙏

“Is it okay if my baby is here during our session?”

Absolutely!

As a mother of two, I understand what it’s like having limited time for yourself. That’s why it is absolutely no problem to BYOB to our sessions.

If you need to nurse, nurse.

If you need to change, no problem.

And if Bebe cries, guess what? I’ve been there and seen it all!

New mamas (and daddy’s of course) deserve support in these early days. Anything that makes it easier for you to get that support is my mission.

Bird-dog reeemix 📀

I’ve been dealing with some vertigo lately so my world has been spinning. I finally got it under control thanks to several rounds of the Epley maneuver.

The perfectionist in me feels an ounce of shame admitting to the world that I’m dealing with a thing. And lately it’s felt like a lot of things i.e. pregnancy, injury, over-use, pain and now vertigo.

But I’m a human being. And maybe that’s okay to admit from time to time.

Anyway moving my head up and down was a major win today.

Hypertrophy 💪🏼

Here’s an example of what hypertrophy training in Pilates might look like.

I’m focusing on deltoid hypertrophy here in the classic “draw a sword” straight from the manual.

I am on one blue spring, which is a moderate resistance for me.

I then performed the exercises at high rep loads: 8 reps in each position for a grand total of 24 reps!! Whew 😅

Changing torso positioning helps target multiple fibers of the Delt and makes things a little more interesting during all those reps.

Repeat this exercise in a circuit class and BAM you’re looking at muscle mass gains.

How those arms feeling ??

When I tell people I’m a Pilates teacher, I’m quite certain they picture me jumping around, most definitely with a sweat band on, revving up a group like a cheerleader on game day.

However this tends to be more my speed (fast forwarded obviously)!

I’m just a girl, in her house shoes, guiding you to find more depth in your movement practice.

But also I’m your cheerleader- that’s spot on. 💁‍♀️

How many times have you been in Pilates class and you switch from a double leg exercise to a single leg and the instructor cues the class to go ahead and pop off a spring?

… I’ve seen it a lot.

Recently in a training, my students were teaching footwork on the reformer to each other and my student asked me, “I should lower her resistance, right?”

Why?

The Pilates universe has a load problem. And while everyone does not necessarily have to be on the same springs, we must continue to challenge our clients in order to make change.

The benefits of working bilaterally are massive - LOAD IT UPPP.

I have had to re-educate so many of my female clients on this topic!
