My first half marathon was the Savannah Women's Half, 7 years ago in 2019. Running a half marathon had always been on my bucket list, but if I am being totally honest, I signed-up to "get in shape" for my wedding that year.

🏃‍♀️ What I focused on while training: Running.
🚫 What I did NOT focus on while training: Mindset, cross training, mobility, strength, backup plans (life happens), and the actual logistics of preparing before and on race day.

While I completed the race and felt that sense of accomplishment, I also left with a very sore and tired body, and saying, "I am never doing that again."

In two weeks, I am heading into my FIFTH half marathon. I am feeling stronger, better prepared, mentally ready, and my body actually feels GOOD after my training runs.

Many runners focus on pace, distance, and mileage. But, the missing piece for a lot of athletes is mobility, recovery, and mindset.

This is where yoga comes in.

According to my son’s dinosaur 🦕 Advent Calendar and Bobby the Elf, there’s only 3 more days until Christmas.

This past weekend, we went tubing for the first time and this fun winter event was actually at the wedding venue my husband and I got married at! It was a walk down memory lane to visit again almost 7 years later, and this time, with Hayes, making it extra special. ✨❄️

As a behavior change specialist, I believe in the power of creating realistic and sustainable lifestyle changes. ☃️ Yes, even healthy habits that can make it through the holiday season!

This time of year is an opportunity for joy, connection, fun, and tradition, and it can also be a challenging time to prioritize your health and wellness. Check out these 6 tips to help you navigate the holidays:

🥗 Mindful eating: DO enjoy social gatherings with friends and family. DON’T overthink it.
⛷️ Joyful movement: 10-15 minute “exercise snacks” are still highly impactful.
🧘‍♀️ Stress management: Consider a yoga or breath-work practice or journaling thoughts on paper.
👯‍♀️ Assess your environment: Stay connected while setting boundaries. Prioritize activities that bring joy.
💤 Sleep and Rest: Plan a solid evening routine and bedtime outside of late night gatherings.
☺️ Fill others cups: Volunteer with a local nonprofit or explore ways to become involved in the community.

There are of course other areas of health that might be helpful for YOU during the holiday season. This is just a starting point.

Woo 😮‍💨 This time of year and the upcoming holidays can be busy, and at times … stressful.

Taking moments to check-in with ourselves, and asking, “How am I doing?” and “How am I feeling?” can make an impact on how we navigate this season.

This video walks through a brief, 2-3 minute body scan. Take the time you need to check-in with yourself, spending time on each part of the body and maybe taking 15-20 minutes.

Pause for a couple moments throughout your day to breathe and check-in with your body and mind.

Who here has fallen victim to wellness marketing of overnight results, quick fixes, and guaranteed life overhauls? 🙋‍♀️

The truth about looking better and feeling better, ultimately isn’t glamorous. It doesn’t come in a bottle, it’s not eye-catching, and it takes time.

Making REAL changes to your health typically means back to the basics. It also means focusing on what matters most to YOU. I love the ambition from clients, but sometimes that can also mean unrealistic expectations which doesn’t lead to success in the long run.

CHOOSE YOUR FIGHTER ⬇️
🥕 Increase daily fruit and veggie servings
💤 Establish an evening routine for 7-9 hours of sleep
💪 Complete 150 minutes of weekly moderate exercise PLUS 2 strength training sessions
🍷 Limit or no alcohol (yes, even being mindful during the holiday season)
👯‍♀️ Cultivate community. Our close relationships can impact our overall health

And one of my personal favorites, HYDRATE 🚰. What does your current water intake look like?

Start with one of the basics, and work on it consistently (making any changes along the way) until it becomes a habit.

This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to teach a 60-minute Vinyasa flow to the sweetest bachelorette party! 💍

What a way to start a Saturday morning and celebrate such a beautiful occasion with all of your best friends. And, these lake views weren’t bad either. 😉

Yoga can be a great group activity for personal or professional events, as a way to ground, build connection, and incorporate movement.

A day late for Medal 🏅 Monday. I was still too busy enjoying the most perfect fall weekend in the mountains. 🍁

The Black Bear 8k on Sunday was my first race in almost a year. It felt so good to have something to work towards again, to push myself a bit out of my comfort zone.

This race gave me the boost I needed to get back into the swing of running and training for the Asheville Half Marathon in March.

The YTT class that learns + grows together, stays together. 🫶

Wellness marketing surrounds us, trying to convince us to look younger, work harder, and discover the key to happiness. Do you know what the ultimate answer is for longevity and life satisfaction?

Social connection is imperative for our overall health. I know this can sound easier said than done with work, kids, and all other “adulting” priorities in between.

📱Connection can simply be a text or a phone call.

🔄 Connection doesn’t have to be daily, weekly, or for hours. Most of us hadn’t seen each other since May!
