On this day in 1860, the first Pony Express mail pouch arrived in San Francisco, CA.
It had left St. Joseph, MO on April 3rd, arrived via express riders in Sacramento on the 13th, and was delivered to it's ultimate destination in San Francisco on the 14th.
Pony Express mail service cost $5 per half ounce, which was a considerable sum at the time.
Although viewed as an icon of the Old West, the Pony Express system only operated for 18 months.
