Biscuits 3 Formula 40 Trimaran

Biscuits 3 Formula 40 Trimaran Sailing Development Biscuits 3 was built by CDK in 1988 as Biscuits Cantreau 3. That development lineage culminated in today's MOD-70's and the Ultim Class.

This VPLP designed carbon trimaran won the 1988 and 1989 Formula 40 World Championships. So dominant was her performance that the slower Formula 40 catamarans quit racing, and the F40's (now mostly tris) moved to the Swiss Lakes circuit with turbo'd rigs in the early 1990's, which Biscuits 3 also vanquished. VPLP credits this design as the basis for the ORMA 60 class origins with their Pierre 1er and Primagaz trimarans, which were scaled-up derivatives of Biscuits 3.

After last season's coastal races, and ramp-up of sailing loads in open waters, the team analyzed various structural deflections and concerns, had all of the original VPLP engineering reviewed, and planned specific new carbon reinforcements. 33 years of paint, fairing, and repairs were stripped before beginning the immaculate epoxy infusion of new carbon skins and unidirectionals to Biscuits 3. A huge thank you to the sailing team, Eliot Thorne and Thorne Design for his analysis and engineering, Phil Steggall at BravoLab for his composite and infusion expertise, Kurt Oberle and his High & Dry Boatworks team, Kevin Clarke for his NDT (and DT!), Martin Hill for building the Biscuits Boatworks Shed at Cooper River Boatyard. Biscuits 3 is a special trimaran, and worth every bit of this effort.

Nice to see Florence Arthaud aboard PIERRE 1er on the cover of SEAHORSE. Florence won the 1990 Rhoute du Rhum from France to Guadaloupe aboard her 60’ VPLP trimaran, a scaled up derivative of BISCUITS 3. Steve Fossett purchased PIERRE 1er and renamed her LAKOTA. Steve placed 5th in the 1994 race. LAKOTA was based in Charleston for a season under the care of Dave Scully after that race. Fossett set several records with LAKOTA.
