We promised you a 2021 race update by March 1st.
Last year, we were very out-of-sorts when we had to cancel the 2020 event.
When we began the DD15K Trail Run in 2004, we had a toddler and I was 7mo pregnant with our second daughter. We didn’t have a dog, and I was kinda more of a cat person, honestly. I’d never run a step in my life and had no intention of doing so. Dan had just ventured into the world of ultra running.
We were busy new parents. One of the volunteer slots we recruited for the first several years was “watch over the girls so we can focus on the runners.”
Soon enough, DD15K Saturday became like a holiday for our family. Our girls grew up looking forward to the event and all the excitement of race weekend.
We formed the Hospitality Team and we made promo videos, baked dog treats, put race day packets together, and enjoyed taking photos of all your Top Dogs. We adopted our girl, Niki, from some fellow trail runners. She and I fell in love with running together.
Over the years, we have dragged an assortment of our friends (new and old) out to the woods to fill volunteer stations for us. And we made new friends too, from all over this great state, but also from around the country. We cheered as our race was named Best Doggy Race by Trail Runner Magazine. We celebrated as we took donations to the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association.
Our girls learned that doing something you can be proud of is hard work and that it’s so amazing when it all comes together!
As we sat down to make decisions about this year’s race, we knew we faced some hurdles, but we wanted to bring it back because we love it and we felt there was a void without it.
We’ve now become aware that the Kanawha State Forest Foundation has planned a new Race Series which welcomes participants to run with their pets. There is even a 15k event scheduled for August which seems to be pretty dog-centric.
We believe the void has been filled with this race series and we think runners will have many options to race with their BFRF (best furry run friends).
Our toddler is now a high school senior, and her sister, a junior. The season of making a race together as a family seems to have passed for us now.
We have arrived at the very bittersweet decision that it’s time to discontinue our race, the Dirty Dog 15K.
We want to thank those of you who have run with us year after year. You’ve helped us make our race one of the most fun days ever out in the woods.
