🦈 CALLING ALL SHARK & OCEAN OBSESSED CREATORS 🌊

CSCSharks is gearing up for our 2026 mission: Tag 100 Sharks, and we’re looking for passionate people who want to be part of something big!

We’re seeking volunteer videographers and photographers who are willing to come out with us and help document real-world shark fishing, tagging, and research efforts. This is hands-on, salt-in-your-veins, after-dark, boots-in-the-sand work — and it matters.

More than anything, we’re looking to build friendships with people who love sharks, respect the ocean, and believe in conservation through education and research. If you’re someone who wants to help carry the banner, spread the mission, and help CSCSharks grow so we can do this for the rest of our lives — we want to meet you.

If you’re shark-obsessed, ocean-driven, and feel like you have skills that could benefit our team, please reach out to us via Facebook DMs with:
• Your name
• Your experience (photo/video or related skills)
• A little about why sharks and conservation matter to you

This isn’t just content creation — it’s purpose, community, and conservation.

🦈 Winter Great White Sharks off South Carolina: What You Should Know

Every winter, the waters off the South Carolina coast become part of an important migratory route and wintering ground for great white sharks — one of the ocean’s most iconic apex predators.

🌊 Seasonal Migration

Great white sharks that spend the summer and fall in northern waters (like Cape Cod, Long Island, and Canadian Atlantic waters) begin migrating south in the cooler months. They follow prey and seek out warmer subtropical waters along the southeastern U.S. Atlantic shelf — including South Carolina — roughly from December through March.

This region along the continental shelf is such an important winter habitat that scientists refer to it as part of the Northwest Atlantic Shared Foraging Area, where tagged great whites regularly congregate.

📍 Sharks Being Tracked Here

Marine researchers — especially from organizations like OCEARCH — tag and track many individual great white sharks as they move along the coast. Some examples recorded near South Carolina include:

“Anne Bonny” — a juvenile great white tagged in 2023 and tracked spending winter months cruising near Myrtle Beach and Georgetown.

“Contender” — one of the largest great whites ever tagged (over 1,600 lbs and nearly 14 ft long) has pinged near South Carolina waters during its seasonal movements south.

Other tagged sharks like Cayo, Bella, and Brookes have also been detected in winter off the Carolinas.

These individual stories highlight the bigger pattern: great whites are not just passing through — this area is used repeatedly by migrating sharks.

🧠 Why They’re Here

Water temperature: Great whites prefer cooler waters — typically between 54–68°F — which is part of why they linger along the southeastern continental shelf in winter.

Foraging opportunities: While South Carolina doesn’t have large seal colonies like Cape Cod, the continental shelf has abundant fish and other prey that support sharks as they transit.

📌 What This Means for South Carolina

Although great white sharks do appear off the coast in winter, they are usually found farther offshore on the continental shelf waters and not typically close to shore beaches.

Close encounters with people are very rare, and there are no significant records of shark attacks by great whites in South Carolina waters tied directly to these winter visitors.

🦈 Fun Facts

Great whites can grow up to 20+ feet long and live over 70 years.

Tagging and satellite tracking by researchers help scientists understand migration, habitat use, and population health — and organizations like OCEARCH make much of this data public through shark trackers.
