The Bulldogs were able to field a team to the 2025 SAISA Fall Open Fleet Race Championship hosted by Jacksonville University this past weekend despite ROTC FTX training being rescheduled to the very same weekend. Due to the circumstances, The Citadel ended up fielding a boat that had a skipper, Ben Stevenson, who had never driven before along with a future walk-on of The Citadel Football Team, Daniel Mckenzie, who had only stepped foot in a sailboat twice prior (and both totaled an impressive combined crew weight of over 425 lbs). They put in a valiant effort and went from still sailing upwind, while the rest of the fleet finished the first race to finishing right behind the pack & nearly beating other competitors by the final race. Our other of sophomores Reese Blackwell & Chloe Whitesell boat held in there and had a couple of impressive races to finish 14th in their division. The team was still able to finish 17th overall and nearly pick off a few opponents ahead of them in the standings. Great effort by all.

This was also our head coach Nick Johnstone’s final regatta with The Citadel Sailing Team after helping revitalize the team with a group of our amazing alumni back in the Fall of 2020. The team has qualified for their conference Open Fleet Race & Team Race Championships every semester under coach Johnstone as a consistent Top 10 team within SAISA, finishing as high as 6th in Fleet Racing and 7th in Team Racing over that period.

The team is looking forward to its next chapter and can’t wait to get back on the water this spring!

Congratulations to Alana Hantz ’27 for being selected as a 2025 SAISA First Team All-Conference Crew! Alana is the first Citadel sailor to receive All-Conference honors since SAISA began the tradition in 2020 and on top of that she had never stepped foot in a sailboat before joining the team her k**b year! Go Alana!

Congratulations to the following team members on their season awards:

Most Improved: Chloe Whitesell

Crew of the Year: Alana Hantz

Donald S. Fraser Award: Andrew Tollefson

The Citadel finished 9th overall at the SAISA Spring Open Fleet Race Conference Championship for The Richard L. Tillman Trophy hosted by The University of Miami in windy conditions on Biscayne Bay this weekend. The finish secured The Bulldogs a berth to the SAISA Top 9 Invite to be hosted by CofC this September for a chance to qualify for next fall’s Atlantic Coast Championship Series for the first time in three years. A great finish to the spring season and already looking forward to next fall!

The Citadel finished 14th at The Oberg Trophy at MIT this weekend against some of the top schools in New England. Saturday saw a mix of rain & snow in the morning paired with breeze gusting 25+ knots, which caused racing to be cancelled. On Sunday, six races were completed each for A, B & C Division in a light and classically shifty northerly off the Cambridge shoreline on the Charles River.

The Citadel finished 11th/19 teams at the 2025 Azalea Bowl Regatta hosted by NC State & UNC Wilmington this past weekend. Coach Steve Bishop ’76 once again led our freshmen & sophomore sailors to another impressive finish in back to back weekends. Conditions ranged from 10 to 20+ knots throughout the weekend paired with the famous Banks Channel current, making for exciting racing all weekend long.

The Bulldogs finish 7th at the Hampton University Team Race in Virginia this past weekend.

A huge thank you to Keith Midgette ’76 who invited the team to the Hampton Roads Citadel Club Annual Muster Dinner over at Hampton Yacht Club. It was great to for the cadets to meet alumni of all ages who all had plenty of great stories to tell. A burgee exchange was made between The Citadel, Hampton Yacht Club and Old Point Comfort Yacht Club at the end of the dinner along with a quick speech given by coach about the team.

The Bulldogs looks forward to bouncing back this weekend at the 2025 SAISA Open Team Race Conference Championship hosted by CofC.
