One of my favorite inventions/finds is celebrating its 6th anniversary this summer! I have always enjoyed looking for new and fun ways to lounge on the silks, and this Russian Lounge Chair discovery grew out of explorations I was playing with back in the summer of 2020.

Whenever I make discoveries I always dissect them first before I teach them to my students.
❓Can you see where all the supports are in this pose?
❓Can you see the hidden details that make the Russian Lounge Chair secure?

Then I lead my students to explore safely so they can discover their own unique finds.
❓Is there anything you would like to change about this?
❓Where would you go next?

♥️ The thing I love most about aerial is that there’s always something new to discover, even in the most classic skills. Discoveries require patience, curiosity, and the willingness to stop copying what other people are doing and play with what’s interesting to you.

☑️If you’re a member, you can find the full tutorial for Russian Lounge Chair in our library, including all the technical details, 2 different ways to turn it into a climb, and tips to take the discovery further and make your own discoveries on silks.

The Side Bending Drill on aerial sling is a unique and effective aerial drill that we use in warmups and conditioning. This aerial sling drill helps aerial students tap into and strengthen their active side bending muscles. These aerial core muscles are especially useful for any aerial fabric skill that involves c-shaping, and this type of strength and awareness is always useful for sideways rotational drops where students need to resist gravity on aerial sling. Our aerial sling teaching tutorial video for this creative drill covers two similar but slightly different variations as well as key pro tips and common mistakes to avoid.

A Profile Pullover on Aerial Hoop is an even more challenging version of an already challenging skill. We mostly use this skill as a unique mount for our more advanced students. It is also a very useful transition in choreography and a building block for the Hip Hop Mount.

This tutorial will cover starting from the floor, starting from the air, working with a spin, and a few hidden tips and details. An Asymmetric Pullover is an important building block. If students aren’t comfortable with this, they are not likely to succeed with the Profile Pullover.

It is possible to set up many different aerial silk wraps from a Russian squat, and in our aerial silks curriculum we typically teach these entries from a fabric theory perspective so our aerial silk students can get a deeper understanding of how the wraps work. Our aerial silks tutorial video for the Russian Entry into Double Crucifix covers both the cross and the twist version of the entry, as well as a simply exit into a Hip Key. Our video focuses on the fabric theory connections that inspire students to learn more about the nerdy side of aerial silks.

The Rebecca Wrap to J Roll to Forward Dive Sequence is a long aerial sling sequence for our advanced level aerial sling students. This creative sequence includes a complicated wrap, two different drops, and a unique and interesting transition. Our aerial sling tutorial video for teachers covers the details to approaching this sequence safely, and that includes walking through the drops and making sure the wraps are correct and the height is correct before committing.

Before approaching a long sequence like this, in our aerial sling curriculum we always teach each skill in isolation first and that’s so that our students can master each individual skill without it having to lead anywhere else right away. This process gives our aerial students time to internalize the important concepts of the skills, to understand the supports and the wraps, and to know how their body needs to be engaged.

Then when we do teach the sequence they learn a new way to get into a skill they already know, and that approach frees them up to be more creative and to ask questions. Our students are eventually more likely to come up with their own unique sequences because their learning focuses on the skills in isolation first.

There are many different variations of Flag on Aerial Hoop. The most minimal version we simply call Basic Flag. There is just one hand on the spanset and one on the hoop, with no other supports or points of contact.

The minimalism of this variation of flag actually makes it quite challenging, so we always first work on it with the hoop close to the ground. Starting on a low hoop with the feet on the floor makes the skill so much more accessible and gives students with weaker grips a place to build strength over time.

Our new tutorial is a little different! We’ve gotten lots of questions about this topic and so we’ve explained our process and the approach that has helped our students the most.

External genitalia can sometimes be challenging to manage on aerial silks, and it’s important to know some tips and tricks to help your aerial silk students. This is especially important for aerial teachers who don’t have external genitalia themselves, because they might not even be aware of the issues it can sometimes cause.

Our aerial silks tutorial video for Managing External Genitalia dives into learning to identify aerial silk wraps that might cause problems, and tips to make those wraps accessible for students with outies. This video covers general concepts and some specific examples which are timecoded below. We always recommend exploration and experimentation as the best solutions to finding what feels best in any specific situation. So we recommend taking the concepts we cover in this tutorial and applying them to different wraps and skills on aerial silks, not just the ones shown in this video.

Front Balance Rocks is a useful and versatile conditioning drill for drops and dives and more dynamic movement on aerial sling. This fun aerial sling drill is great for learning to drive the legs strongly behind the body, and for learning how to move confidently and dynamically through an arched body shape. It’s an incredible drill to train pressing the hips forward throughout movements like this. Our aerial sling teaching tutorial video for this move covers two different variations of Front Balance Rocks as well as progressions and tips to make them safe and confident.

The Meat Hook Variation of Trapped Middle Straddle was a very happy accident. It came together all on its own from a little experimentation and play. The skill looks like a Meat Hook, and it shares a lot of concepts with the Meat Hook, but it doesn’t require the ability to do a full Meat Hook. In fact, we sometimes use this skill as a troubleshooting tool for students training Meat Hooks.

This tutorial will walk through our training progressions, and each step of the progression can be used as a variation. Our students love how dramatic this skill is, and of course, we make them train it on both sides.
