Some dive gear is haunted. Not by ghosts: by every “I’ll replace that next season” you’ve ever said. 👻

The 20-year-old regulator. The mask held together with silicone and optimism. The BCD with a slow leak. That wetsuit that may qualify as a biohazard.

Funny in the dive locker. Not so funny when your life depends on it underwater.

Before your next dive, inspect your gear and follow the manufacturer’s service schedule. If something’s damaged, leaking, or past its service interval, get it checked by a qualified technician, or retire it. Nostalgia is not a safety feature.

Give your haunted gear a proper send-off. Your dive buddy will thank you. 🎃

A must read!

The helmet camera footage from Dave Shaw’s final dive isn’t studied across the technical diving world as a cautionary tale. It’s studied because for twelve straight minutes at the bottom of Boesmansgat, a man kept working. Kept trying. Kept doing exactly what he’d come there to do, right up until the second his body could give no more.

Before that January 2005 descent, Shaw was already one of the most elite technical divers alive. The Australian pilot had logged over 1,000 dives, one of only nine people ever to push past 800 feet on a rebreather. Months earlier, exploring South Africa’s deadly Bushman’s Hole cave, he’d stumbled on something no one had seen in a decade: the body of 20-year-old Deon Dreyer, lost there in 1994.

He surfaced, tracked down the grieving family, and made them a promise. He was going back down to bring their son home.

The logistics were staggering: 50 helium tanks, 28 bailout stations strung down the cave wall, seven divers staged as depth relays. Shaw mounted a camera to his helmet to document the recovery. On January 8, he slipped into the dark water.

He reached Dreyer at 890 feet. But a decade in near-freezing water had left the body unexpectedly buoyant, and it tangled tight in his gear. Twelve minutes of brutal, exhausting work later, carbon dioxide buildup overcame him. He blacked out. His partner Don Shirley pushed as deep as he dared before turning back, left with permanent decompression injuries.

Five days later, both bodies rose toward the surface together. Deon finally came home to his family, ten years and one month after he vanished. Shaw was 50.

That footage is no record of failure. It’s a record of decency. Of a man who calculated every risk down to the exact gas mixture, and went anyway. Because some promises are worth everything.
