Infant Aquatics of Charleston

Infant Aquatics of Charleston A comprehensive swimming and aquatic survival program here in CHS teaching children 6 months to 6 yrs Here is what we teach!

We are specialists in teaching infants and toddlers aquatic survival and swimming skills. We teach children from 6 months through 6 years skills to safely enjoy the water. We have limited our lessons to children under the age of 6 years because this is the age of children who are most at risk for aquatic accidents. Children who are walking learn to swim face down in the water (holding their breath

, not blowing bubbles), propel with their legs through the water until they reach the side of the pool. When the distance is too great for them to go on one breath, we teach them to roll over onto their back to float, rest and breathe. Once they have a good breath and are ready to swim again, they flip back onto their tummies and continue swimming until they can attain the edge. If they need air, they return to their backs to rest and breathe. This is known as the "swim-float-swim sequence". Infants between approximately 6-11 months who are not walking learn to hold their breath and roll over to their back to rest and breathe. (4-week program) Once our infant "floaters" are walking, they return to private lessons to learn the complete swim-float swim sequence (additional 4-6 weeks) described above. The reason our lessons are so effective is that we are professional, highly skilled instructors with a proven method, that the founder and my teacher, Judy Huemann, personally developed over 40 years. Lessons are individualized for each child.

Great Read!

Most parents think of swimming as a way to keep kids active. But researchers and therapists have been paying close attention to something deeper: the way water changes how children regulate their emotions and behavior.

Swimming and aquatic therapy have been shown to improve emotional regulation, attention, behavior, and psychosocial functioning in children — including those with ADHD and autism spectrum disorder. These benefits go well beyond what you would expect from burning energy alone.

Swimming engages multiple sensory systems, providing proprioceptive, vestibular, and tactile feedback. The hydrostatic pressure of water can provide deep pressure stimulation — a similar sensation to a hug — which has been shown to calm the nervous system and improve focus.
Deep pressure increases parasympathetic activity (rest-and-digest) and reduces sympathetic activity (fight-or-flight), lowering stress and anxiety. It can also increase serotonin and dopamine, supporting mood stability and a grounded feeling.

Regular swimming training has been shown to stimulate the development of children's nervous, muscular, and motor systems more effectively than many other forms of physical activity. The rhythmic, repetitive nature of swimming strokes adds an additional layer of calm — one that tends to carry over well beyond the pool.

It is no surprise, then, that occupational therapists and pediatric physiotherapists regularly incorporate aquatic activity into therapeutic programs for children who struggle with sensory regulation and behavioral challenges.

Did your child leave swim lessons this summer knowing what to do if they fell in the water alone?

🤦‍♀️ Or did they spend the summer bobbing around in a puddle jumper—leaving you with a gut feeling that they're still not safe?

We get it. You signed them up for swim lessons because you care.

👉But now you’re wondering... what did those lessons actually do?

Back to school doesn’t mean the end of water safety.
Your child still needs to be prepared.

🥇 That’s where your local Infant Aquatics® instructor comes in!

❌ This isn’t a once-a-week, "see you next summer" program.

✅ Your child’s instruction will be short, focused, one-to-one lessons.
✅ And in weeks, your child will walk away with REAL skills.

Yep—even if they struggled all summer in group lessons.

➡️ Your Infant Aquatics instructor will make sure your child practices in real clothes—because drowning doesn’t care if it’s after school and they’re still in jeans.

➡️ Your instructor will teach your child how to find their air, how to stay calm, and how to make decisions in the water when it matters most.

Water isn’t always part of the plan.
But your child’s safety should be.

Ditch the rec center swim lessons that didn’t teach your kid anything this summer.

Look at this flip and float!!

Skyler (2) is the 3rd sibling in a local family that Jen has taught, and next year the baby will join IACHS to learn swim safety.

Skyler is a strong swimmer and floater - very focused and controlled!
My favorite part about this video, aside from her awesome float, is hearing her calming breath. Well done little one!
