I grabbed a drink with a friend last week who works in palliative care.
One of our friends joked about how they'd rather eat what they want and die at 69 than live to 78 lifting.
She didn't laugh.
She put her glass down and said,
She told me about people who can't walk to the bathroom on their own. Can't sleep through the night without pain. Can't remember their grandkids' names.
People who spent decades trading their future for convenience. And now they're spending those last years wishing they'd done it differently.
She said the hardest part of her job isn't the dying. It's watching people realize too late that the bill always comes due.
So when someone tells me they don't care about dying young, I get it.
But that's not the trade you're actually making.
The real trade is this: Take care of yourself now and stay sharp and mobile until the end. Or coast now and pay for it with a long, slow, painful exit you didn't see coming.
Most people don't get to pick the length. But you absolutely get to influence the quality.
- Lift something heavy.
- Walk every day.
- Sleep as it matters.
- Eat food that didn't come from a factory.
Not so you can live forever.
So the years you do get are actually worth living.
