Don’t let one ribbon define you

It’s heartbreaking to watch a rider leave the ring after the best performance of their life in tears, Dr. Stefanie Mazer, PSY.D writes. To the casual observer, the reaction may appear disproportionate. The horse was well prepared, and the course was ridden with confidence and technical skill. Yet the rider sees only the ribbon, or the absence of one. In that moment in the rider’s mind, the placing becomes a verdict on talent, dedication, potential, and self-worth.

Parents, trainers, and fellow competitors often respond with reassuring words: “It’s only one horse show.” “Don’t let one ribbon define you.” While these sentiments are well-intentioned, they may overlook a more important question:

What if the emotional response is not simply the product of individual psychology, but of the reward system the individual has learned to navigate?

Sport has always served as more than recreation or entertainment. Every athletic culture teaches its participants what excellence looks like. In doing so, it also teaches them what deserves admiration, what is worthy of pursuit, and ultimately, what gives a person value within that community. The measures a culture consistently celebrates gradually become the values its members internalize.

This principle extends well beyond athletics. Schools communicate what intelligence looks like through grades. Workplaces shape priorities through promotions and incentives. Families communicate values through praise and attention. Riding is no different. Ribbons, championships, rankings, year-end awards, and public recognition all communicate, whether intentionally or not, what the community believes success should look like.

Mentors don’t just master their craft — they make sure others can master it, too.

This week we honor 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐞, whose career has been defined by innovation, education, and a deep commitment to advancing equine sports medicine.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Genovese built a career spanning more than five decades, including his work with Randall Veterinary Hospital and as cofounder of Cleveland Equine Clinic LLC. Widely recognized as a pioneer in equine limb ultrasonography, his advancements helped transform how veterinarians diagnose and treat lameness — influencing care for horses around the world. Many can attest to his dedication and impact, which led to him joining The Foundation for the Horse's My Mentor Honor Wall in 2019.

But perhaps his greatest impact is found in those who continue to follow his guidance.

“His love of equine veterinary medicine has always been clear and unquestionable to both clients and peers alike. Dr. Genovese would always take time to explain what and why he was doing something during a case to whomever wanted to listen, whether a high school student shadowing or a fellow veterinarian working on a case. He simply lives and works for the teachable moments to whomever is interested. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to collaborate on a case or perhaps attend a lecture or wet lab that he has instructed will understand his dedication not only to the horse and owner, but also the veterinary community and its doctors.”— Brett A. Berthold, DVM, Cleveland Equine Clinic

Dr. Genovese has shown that true expertise is not just about what you know — it’s about how willingly you share it.
