Can you shut them down before they get off the starting blocks? Can you deny them the connection that they want?
Don't let them show you what they are good at! Grip breaks for self-defense, and setting upo your taijutsu-style kihon (and a single-leg, because why not...) .

These techniques, and moreover, the strategy, can be used in self-d...

One who excels at moving (kuzushi?) the enemy deploys in a configuration to which the enemy must respond. He offers something that the enemy must seize. With profit (tsuki-kake?) he moves them, with foundation (kamae?) he awaits them.

From the first three chapters of the Art of War, we learned:
1. How to assess the likelihood of victory.
2. Just how expensive war can be.
3. That the ultimate expression of a general’s strength is to capture the enemy while, without fighting.

This week, we want to move through Chapters 4, 5, & 6.
Follow along and feel free to contribute to the discussion!

Going to train with the Clinch Pick for a bit before I bite the bullet and buy the sharp one.
I’m conflicted though, get the “Chore Pick” (more practical for me) or get the “clinch pick” with the reverse blade (maybe better as a dedicated self-defense tool). Gonna play with both and make my decision soon!
Any folks with one or the other want to help me make my decision?

Spent today at training with the incomparable T. Mac, and it was another killer class! This “best of” experience was super fast paced but Tim still found time to answer everyone’s questions!
If wilderness skills, emergency preparedness, wild edibles, or homesteading type stuff is your jam, Tim is your man!

I know most folks seeing this likely also follow of dojo page, CHQuest, but if you don’t, could you check something for me? On your device, or maybe a friend or family member’s, could you search for CHQuest to find Quest Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense’s instagram account?
Two people this week, in front of me, tried to find our account and it wouldn’t show us to them. This is rough because I’ve been trying to grow the awareness of our dojo on the Meta platforms for a LONG TIME, and this is heart breaking to me.
I’d love to know how pervasive this issue is, even though there appears no way to resolve it.
Thank you in advance!

One of my earliest jiu-jitsu instructors sent me this picture of a picture showing me training with from back in 2008.
It was at this seminar where I was presented with my BJJ purple belt 18 years ago.
A lot of my earliest training memories came from a time before I had a smart phone and I never thought enough to document things.
I’m immensely grateful to get these glimpses back in time!
If you’re just starting out training, take pictures and videos of your journey. You will appreciate them one day!!!
